Cate Blanchett stars as Carol, a lesbian socialite going through a divorce, and Rooney Mara stars as Therese Belivet, a Bloomingdales employee and aspiring photographer. Patricia Highsmith wanted to do the unheard of task of creating a lesbian romance novel with a happy ending. It took 20 years from the time the first draft of the screenplay was started until the film was released.
