Preachers like George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards boldly proclaimed the need for personal salvation through Jesus Christ. The result was revival in the churches and entire communities transformed by Christ. Historians often call this movement the First Great Awakening. It reminded people that religion was not merely ceremony or tradition. Christianity required a changed heart. That revival helped shape the moral foundation of early America. Jesus said in John 3:3, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”What America desperately needs is the transforming power of the Gospel. May God send another awakening in our day.
