Episode 24: Homeopathy for Pregnancy with Charlie Ellis-James

from Homeopathy 247 Podcast

Pregnancy can bring incredible changes, but it can also come with anxiety, exhaustion, heartburn, headaches and physical discomfort that make everyday life more difficult. In this episode of the 247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith speaks with homeopath Charlie Ellis-James about her special interest in pregnancy, birth and postpartum care. Charlie shares her own experience of pregnancy and explains why this stage of life encouraged her to explore even more deeply. Why Pregnancy Became a Special Interest Charlie was already a qualified homeopath when she became pregnant herself. Although she enjoyed her pregnancy, she began experiencing some of the everyday discomforts that can come with the physical and hormonal changes taking place. That experience made her particularly interested in supporting women during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Looking at the Individual Picture One of Charlie's main messages is that homeopathic prescribing should not simply mean choosing one remedy because somebody is pregnant or has a particular symptom. Two women may both experience anxiety, for example, but the details surrounding that anxiety can be completely different. A homeopath may consider what the person worries about, how the anxiety feels physically, when it appears and what other symptoms are happening at the same time. This is where individualized medicine becomes especially important. Anxiety, Heartburn and Pelvic Discomfort Charlie shares the story of a woman in her fourth pregnancy who was experiencing unusually high anxiety. She was also struggling with heart palpitations, insomnia, severe heartburn and pelvic girdle discomfort. After considering the complete picture, Charlie prescribed Arsenicum album and describes the changes the woman reported during follow up. Charlie uses the case to explain why the remedy was selected for the whole symptom picture rather than anxiety alone. Exhaustion and Natrum Muriaticum Another case involves a pregnant woman dealing with intense exhaustion, migraines, worrying thoughts, irritability and a feeling that her head was extremely heavy. Charlie also noticed a pattern of dryness, including dry eyes, mouth and skin, along with a strong craving for salt. These details contributed to her decision to prescribe Natrum muriaticum. Again, Charlie stresses that one symptom such as craving salt would never be enough by itself to identify the remedy. Physical and Emotional Symptoms Together Mary and Charlie discuss how pregnancy makes it especially easy to see the connection between physical and emotional changes. Hormones, sleep, fears, physical discomfort and previous emotional experiences may all interact. Homeopathic consultations give Charlie time to explore these different areas rather than viewing each symptom separately. Learning to Self Prescribe Carefully Charlie also discusses home prescribing during pregnancy and why understanding the individual remedy picture matters. Her advice is to begin simply, learn the basic principles and ask a qualified practitioner for guidance when unsure. Pregnancy should continue to be supported with appropriate antenatal and medical care, particularly when symptoms are severe, unusual or concerning. Key Takeaways Pregnancy can bring both physical and emotional changes. Homeopathic prescribing considers the individual rather than pregnancy symptoms alone. Anxiety can look very different from one person to another. Charlie discusses Arsenicum album in a case involving anxiety, heartburn and insomnia. Natrum muriaticum is discussed in a different case involving exhaustion, migraines, dryness and worrying thoughts. One symptom alone is not enough to identify a homeopathic remedy. Pregnancy, birth and postpartum health can all require different types of support. should complement rather than replace appropriate antenatal and medical care.   Her book is available for you to download from http://fromehomeopath.co.uk/ and you can also get in touch with Charlie from here too.
