Historically, research, such as that conducted by Paul Ekman, established a foundation of six core, universal "basic" emotions: Happiness, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Surprise. However, more contemporary research, notably from UC Berkeley, has expanded this view, identifying 27 distinct categories of emotion, which include nuanced states such as Admiration, Awe, Anxiety, and Amusement, emphasizing the rich and varied nature of subjective emotional experiences.
