Episode 25: Ego Exercise While Driving

from I Believe In You · host Lee MJ Elias

Do you have an ego? (We all do 😬)Ego is not always what you think it is. Sometimes it can be the typical, “I think I’m better than everyone else.”, but sometimes it can be more subtle. If you’ve every thought, “that must be nice.” sarcastically at someones success or had super road rage - that’s your ego coming out.Ego is any thought that deals with your self-esteem or self-importance. It’s not always a bad thing to have one - it can get you through some tough situations (especially in sports). But we should all strive to be in control of it, or even curious about it. Ego is also the part of the mind that mediates between conscience and unconscious behaviors dealing with your personal identity. Ego can start wars and win championships. It’s a broad space. Let’s use the traffic example again. When someone cuts you off, do you enter into a state of rage that they would dare to get ahead of you in such an egregious way, or do you stay present and in control and understand that you have no control over that person, their actions or their intentions. The second one is NOT always easy - thats why I try to practice it whenever I can. Whenever I’m in a situation where a stranger starts to make my blood heat up, I remember the Robin Williams quote, “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be Kind.” - I can get behind that.I believe in you, you should too.P.S. If you listen to this podcast and got a little angry, that’s OK! Get curious about WHY.
