EPISODE 252 - Bones, What’re You Doing With That Tribble?

What Bones was doing with a tribble in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is just one of many unanswered questions about the film. One might answer, “He was injecting it with Khan’s blood, remember?” But that’s not entirely what we mean. Not only was the out-of-place line delivered by Kirk in the middle of what was supposed to be an intense back-and-forth between him and Khan, but it begged the question, what the hell was Bones doing with a Tribble? Where did it come from? How did he get it? Why was it dead? Why didn’t it multiply as they’re so famous for doing? In a film that prides itself on being a STAR TREK movie for the masses, not just the fans, you’d think they’d have taken more care to introduce the iconic creature to all these “new fans” they’re trying to usher in. But the Tribble is trivial when looking at the film overall. We’ve devoted more airtime to ranting about the reboot of this franchise than I’d care to admit. We could easily burn through another whole show on INTO DARKNESS. But I know you’re probably tired of hearing our stance. And frankly, I’m exhausted trying to convince people why they should hate these movies. So it gets EXACTLY ten minutes of our time today. The timer clicks away and when it goes off, we are done with the subject, mid-sentence or not. Besides what Dr. McCoy has in store for that poor little fuzz ball, there’s another question we’ve got to ask… how are you liking the fourth season of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT on Netflix? It’s our poll question for the next couple of weeks. Give it a star rating just as you would on the streaming service. Turns out, about 85% of the people who did, gave it either four or five stars. So it seems it’s doing quite well. I’m three episodes in, pacing myself and cherishing the Bluth family for the first time in seven years, and I’ve got a small complaint and an observation. I share those on today’s show. The question of what Amazon Studios pilots will get series orders has been answered. The online retailer announced last week that ALPHA HOUSE and BETAS are getting season orders along with several kids shows. Both of those shows I did not watch. I’m a little disappointing THE ONION EMPIRE didn’t get chosen. But this is a whole new business model for greenlighting shows Amazon is trying out, so who knows, maybe there’s still time. How deep is the barrel of despair with which Hollywood ladles out the big screen slop they call movies these days? That question’s answer? Really fucking deep. Like, bottomless pit leads to other dimension deep. You’ve probably heard by now that Grumpy Cat, the frowning feline seen in all those silly little memes, is getting a movie. The cat is real and the images are not Photoshopped with the exception of the clever captions you always see on them. The cat, whose real name is Tartar Sauce, even has a manager. It’s believed the movie will be similar to the live-action GARFIELD they made back in 2004. It’s also believed, by us, that this is kinda pathetic of Hollywood. Are we resorting to finding inspiration for multi-million dollar movies on our Facebook feeds? The answer to that question is… YES! Do you know when the first computer mouse was invented? Don’t cheat and Wikipedia it. The answer is 1963! Douglas Engelbart made it out of a little wooden box and it rolled around on tiny wheels.
