EPISODE 257 - Ample Turnovers

from Who Asked You? · host Chase Shumway

It’s the EARLY EDITION cat!!!It’s been an eventful week for us. Lots to talk about. We hope those of you here in the USA had a good Independence Day. Dennis and I spent ours on a trip to Fry’s, eating some bomb taco salads and getting drunk while watching a Nicolas Cage movie. These days you pretty much have to be in order to sit through his work. It was entertaining in that cringe-inducing, you’re embarrassed for all involved sort of way. The movie was called STOLEN. It was a dollar store TAKEN. The only thing stolen was 92-minutes of our time. As bad as it was, the movie put me in a good mood. I needed it after that trip to Fry’s where I attempted to buy an SSD drive. Does Fry’s price match Amazon? Yes, they do. But then they turn around and tack sales tax onto it which brings it right back up to the price we started with. I realize all brick and mortar stores do this. And that makes them all stupid. How do they expect to compete by doing that. After sales tax the drive was $18 instead of the original $17 more than if I were to buy it from Amazon. I told the cashier I could get it for less there without sales tax and free shipping. Why on Earth would I come here and pay all that for it? If you’re going to price match, MATCH THE FREAKIN’ PRICE! Needless to say I left Fry’s drive-less and annoyed. Plus, I hit the curb leaving the parking lot which just added to my fury. This really is all a mute point though as Amazon will start charging us sales tax here in Nevada next year. I’ll have that damned drive by then, mark my words. Dennis recently signed up for the Dollar Shave Club which is the website brought up on the show a few episodes back where they send you fresh razors automatically each month. He subscribed not only to the razor program, but added the minty butt wipes which were just recently introduced. He provides us with his review of both products during today’s show. Something special happens right at the top of the New Releases segment. It is the quietest moment EVER in the history of our show. Find out which DVD shuts us up. It’ll come as no surprise, I’ll say that much. If you haven’t been keeping up with Paula Deen and the web-based shenanigans surrounding her N-word usage, the latest update is that she’s been offered a job by a pornography company. Now of course, she’s not going to actually do porn, and I think the company recognizes that. So instead, PureMature, a website specializing in MILF videos is asking her to simply be their spokesperson. And they’re willing to pay her well too. We all know she’s not going to accept . In fact, she probably won’t even respond to them at all. Not publicly anyway. But lets be honest… where she’s at right now, it would probably be a career booster. In the impossible even that she does one day do porn to pay her bills, we offer up some possible names for the video. MAN OF STEEL felt like a sequel to MAN OF STEEL. That’s why we’re a little confused that there’s talk on Twitter with Russell Crowe about a MAN OF STEEL prequel. Folks have been twatting at him about reprising his role in a movie that would lead up to the events of the latest Superman. He twatted back that he’d be open to the idea of a Jor-El movie and that if everyone wanted that they should tell Legendary Pictures. Do we, the Who Asked You? Crew want this? Listen and find out. Remember WebTV? Of course you don’t. Like the Microsoft Zune, it was another piece of technology yours truly adopted that never quite caught on. Of course, WebTV came out waaaay before the Zune. But even back then my tastes in tech didn’t seem to match most. WebTV was a set top box that allowed you to surf the Internet using your television. It was basically a dial up modem with video and audio outputs. You could get a wireless keyboard for it and shoot people E-Mails from your couch or try desperately to find MPEG porn clips that the damned thing could play. Back then boys and girls, that was about the only video format online. Well, that and RealPlayer. Yuck! Anyway, long story short, Microsoft bought the company and renamed the product MSN TV. And this week, to the dismay of grandmas who got one for Christmas a decade ago and are still using it today, the company sent out a notice that they’ll be closing down the service this September. There was such potential for the product, even ten years ago when broadband first started to take hold, but Microsoft neglected it and now there are dozens of better, faster and in some cases, cheaper options out there. If kids still gave a shit about board games today, a life-sized one might be their dream come true. Since we grew up in an era when they were a big deal, it’s a dream come true for us… grown men. Japan is honoring Hasbro’s “The Game Of LIFE” by turning its Yoron Island into a giant version of the game. You can pay $5, hop on a bus and make a trip around the island landing on giant 18-square-foot tiles and exchanging LIFE money which at the end you can turn in for real cash and prizes. It’s all part of the game’s 45th anniversary. And speaking of milestones, IHOP celebrated one yesterday. It’s not a story on the show, I just thought I’d bring up an awesome moment of frugality. You know us, we’re always on the lookout for a cheap meal. And you can’t get much cheaper than this. For one day only, they were offering short stacks for the original 1955 price of $0.60! We wrapped the show and high-tailed it to the nearest location because, thanks to our shitty economy, most of the Vegas stores aren’t 24-hours anymore and the special was ending at 10pm when they closed. By now you might be wondering: What’s up with that EARLY EDITION cat picture? Hmmm… you’ll find out. SHOW LINKS: DollarShaveClub.com – Gets Dennis’ Seal of Approval!
