Episode 258 - The Handmaiden

from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil

A Korean woman in the 1930's becomes the new handmaiden of a Japanese heiress.  But things are not as they seem.  Throw in explicit sex, sumptuous production design and the masterful direction of Park Chan-Wook and you've got 'The Handmaiden'.  Perhaps destined for a spot on Andrew's Best of 2016 list, this film has become a critical darling, but not quite broken through to American audiences yet.  The director of 'Oldboy' and other violent films tackles a very different and sensual subject matter.  The story has many twists and turns, all the while maintaining an elegant sense of detachment as it juggles a complex story involving many characters.
