EPISODE 259 - Thell Go See It

IMAGE CREDIT: dnmn89 on deviantART“I give up.” Those were the first words out of Dennis’ mouth as the credits rolled at THE WOLVERINE. It has become painfully obvious to all of us that Hollywood will NEVER get any comic book source material right. But for some reason, Dennis held out hope that with Wolvey’s latest outing they would. Sometimes they pull it off okay (THE AVENGERS, IRON MAN, HELLBOY). Usually they do not (X-MEN trilogy, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, GREEN LANTERN, DAREDEVIL, HULK, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) and now, THE WOLVERINE. Our feelings on this movie are a bit mixed actually. It’s not a ‘bad’ movie. I think the best way to put it would be it had a lot of missed opportunities. It goes without saying that it was definitely better than X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. And then there are the little things… like those god damned bone claws! Those are in this movie. We’re treated to them within the first five minutes. Bone claws don’t make any sense. They never have, and those who defend them really have no defense. Even in the movie they’re out of place. In X-MEN 2 we saw Wolverine’s X-rays which clearly showed the spring-loaded mechanisms in his forearms that made the claws work. They established that the claws were added during the Weapon X experiments on Logan. But now, in this new film, those boned pointers are back. They don’t get explained and there’s an event in the film, which I don’t want to spoil here, that adds even MORE confusion to this bone claw fiasco. Make no bones about it… among other things, this movie could’ve easily done without them. But despite its many many many flaws, we do recommend seeing it. Or in other words, it could have been a lot worse. Jabari and I could’ve easily done without seeing R.I.P.D. Yet, we did. Don’t ask us why. We can’t answer that. It’s probably my fault for not seeing the first GROWN UPS. Jabari had suggested part two, but since I hadn’t seen the first one, I threw out Ryan Reynolds’ latest blunder. By all accounts across the web, R.I.P.D. is well on its way to being the summer’s first big flop. You’ll hear a few reasons why on today’s show. We take a brief break from all the comic talk to go over this week’s DVD releases. Oddly, we’re a bit quiet at the top of the show while going over a few of the major announcements from Comic-Con last week. And we’re just as quiet during the new releases. In both instances, there’s just nothing to really talk about. Nothing jumpin’ out at us. With those out of the way, it’s back to the comics and movies. Andrew Garfield panicked a few gazillion fan boys when he threw out the idea of Spider-Man/Peter Parker being gay or bisexual in the next film and making MJ a dude. Heads exploded, blogs crashed and the movie’s director Marc Webb was… was… well, he didn’t seem concerned. Since he makes all the decisions, he didn’t really need to be. Plus, Garfield shot the idea down when asked about it at Comic-Con. He explained that it was tongue-and-cheek and that it was more of a philosophical question than anything. Still, we ponder the implications of a Spidey who slings his web for both sexes on this week’s show. Is he a good platform for such a thing? Or, if they want to do a gay character, should it just be a whole new one? Perhaps a new superhero altogether? What do you think? Shoot us an E-Mail or voice message if you want. And finally, director Ivan Reitman FINALLY sets the record straight about GHOSTBUSTERS 3. An intrepid attendee at a recent screening of the original movie in which Reitman attended filmed his response to a question about the third installment and posted it on YouTube. You can watch the clip in the Show Links. His clearing the air didn’t really clear things up too much. The gist of the video is this, the movie may or may not get made. And Bill Murray may or may not be in it. So there you go! The only thing that’s cleared up now is that the movie’s own director isn’t sure what’s going to happen. In a way this is good though. At least these guys are taking the time to try and get it right. Keyword there being “try”. One thing is certain. Whether it’s bone claws, a gay Spider-Man or a Bill Murray-less GHOSTBUSTERS, when it comes to the general public, as you’ll hear Dennis grammatically botch it in the chat room, thell go see it.
