Episode 265 - 20th Century Women

from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil

If there's anything we can take away about life in 1979 (the year before Andrew and Phil were born) it's that the music was kick-ass.  Our hosts would like to lead off by saying it's possible to love Black Flag AND Talking Heads.  Mike Mills may not be the bassist for R.E.M., but he certainly grasps what is a killer tune.  Phil was dismayed that the most excellent soundtrack for 20th Century Women didn't quite up the game of the filmmaking (ala Kubrick, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, PT Anderson etc.) but this is certainly a writer's movie.  Which did Mills come up with first: the characters or setting?  Phil considers the film an extended reminiscence; but Andrew calls it a character study.  Whoever is right, 20th Century Women is a must-see from 2016.
