EPISODE 265 - The Negroid

from Who Asked You? · host Chase Shumway

Sooo… did you catch the ROBOCOP trailer this past week? We sure as hell did. Before I get into our position on it, let me say that it’s been suggested from time to time that we hate everything. We’re an incredibly cynical podcast. That’s just not true. There’s stuff we like too. With that being said, the ROBOCOP remake looks AWFUL! This movie is a real disservice to the fans, cast and crew of the original. Are we just being cynical again? We sure as hell are! Somebody has to. My god, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS was two stars shy of the full ten on IMDb. It’s clear the general movie-going public has terrible taste and wouldn’t know good or bad screenwriting if it slapped ‘em in the face. How much longer are we going to allow Hollywood to systematically dismantle treasured cinema? And, I’m certain the sheeple will flock to the theater and cough up that ten bucks as fast as they can to see this terrible remake. Looking at the trailer, it’s clear they’ve done with ROBOCOP exactly what I was afraid they were going to do… they’re taking it way too seriously. Watch the original. It’s social commentary and satire. It’s not dark, Oscar-winning or thought-provoking. It’s a fun, absurd take on American culture and our excessive buying habits and callous disregard for one another. I’m amazed they’re trying this. The movie is called ROBOCOP for Christ sake! That’s just some of my thoughts on it, you’ll hear the guys’ commentary on today’s show. It’s worth mentioning that STAR TREK turned 47 yesterday. We take a moment to acknowledge that it has not aged well. Its Son’a-style face stretch has left a glob of flesh tacked to the back of its head in the shape of Zackery Quinto. Going back to us being so cynical all the time. I have recorded proof that we’re not! We all enjoyed SPAWN, a 1997 film based on Todd McFarlane’s comic book. The general buzz was that the movie didn’t do the comic justice, but we liked it. Now comes news that McFarlane is working on a script for a remake and will need to have it finished by the end of the year. Even better, he’s also producing and directing it! He says there’s some big names interested in the project and it’ll be more like a horror film rather than a big-budget superhero movie. We take a few minutes and debate whether or not INDEPENDENCE DAY needs a sequel. Doesn’t really matter I suppose, because they’re making one anyway. The announcement was made in June, but it’s back in the news with comments from director Roland Emmerich that Will Smith may reprise his role, which is contrary to what Emmerich told the press back in June when the feature was announced. He and Dean Devlin have written the script that has several key characters from the first returning. Personally, I don’t think the movie needs a sequel. They rounded out the story just fine and established that the entire race moves from planet to planet; therefore we killed them all with Jeff Goldblum’s virus and a nuke. Any story where they “phoned home” is going to be stupid. I hope they’ve got something more clever than that planned. I also don’t want to see an apocalyptic Earth ravaged by a war between us and surviving aliens from the crashed ships. I’ve seen too many movies with too similar of a plot. There are some in our group that wouldn’t mind another extraterrestrial go at the 4th of July. Find out who, coming up! We bag on McDonald’s a lot here at Who Asked You? and today is no exception. Starting this month, the golden arches will offer bone-in chicken wings. It’s one of the faster growing trends in the restaurant biz generating billions in sales and Mickey-D’s wants to get in on the action. What concerns us though is how much more racist their commercials are going to get. We’ve already seen a black kid dancing at the dinner table over some chicken-like substance and some Asian kids having a CROUCHING TIGER-like duel over a Happy Meal toy, so what’s next? McDonald’s almost exclusively casts black actors for their commercials, so they’d better tread carefully when advertising the oddly titled, Mighty Wings. And I saved the best story for last. Over the past several months pregnant women have been offering up their positive pregnancy tests on Craigslist for a nominal fee. You truly can find just about anything on Craigslist. For around $25 you can get a test that’s pre-peed on with positive results. Fake out your family, scare the living shit out of your boyfriend or trick him into finally popping the question. That’s the sales pitch, by the way, that popped up in a couple of the ads. Others simply took a stance that what you do with it is your business. Some of the women are even on their way to a prank preggo test empire, offering to pee on as many sticks as you want to buy! Not to take this lying down — the way these ladies did the cock — there’s a guy offering his sterile semen for a hefty price. When she pulls out the test and says, I’m pregnant, marry me. And you know it ain’t yours, you can pull out a cup of this guy’s man batter and say, nuh-uh bitch, I’m sterile. Jokes on you! And then revel in the stunned reaction on her face. Hopefully you won’t be stunned when I tell you we’re off next week. But we’ll be back for another live show on Sunday the 22nd at the usual time and place.
