In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with author Jackie Disch about grieving the death of a spouse. We discuss her memoir Losing Katy: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Living Grief, which is an account of her experiences surrounding the death of her wife Katy. We discuss things Jackie wishes people knew or understood better when it comes to grief surrounding the death of a spouse, as well as some challenges, differences, and unique experiences that LGBTQ+ individuals face when it comes to grief related to the death of a spouse. Jackie discusses ripple grief when it comes to experiencing grief and having a chosen family, in addition to what good care and support look like when honoring pronouns, relationship language, and community context. We discuss the many ways in which LGBTQ+ marriages can be validated or erased, at individual, institutional, and systems levels and how validation and visibility change the grief experience. Jackie shares how can one keep showing up and living each day after the death of a spouse and provides words of encouragement for anyone currently struggling with the death of their partner or spouse.
