When she died, we found the recipe tucked away inher bookshelf. It had been a treat, when eggs were rationed; a wartime cake made with mayonnaise and baking soda and red food colouring. When we baked it, it was every bit as vile as it sounded.Heraclitus said you can never step in the same river twice. Gran knew that.
