Episode 27: Orthopaedic Surgery - Coffee with Dr Mario Rankin

Hi, and welcome to this week’s episode of the Dr coffee podcast. In this week’s Coffee with consultants feature I had the great privilege of interviewing Dr Mario Rankin, representing his specialty of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr Rankin is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the King Edward VIII hospital in Durban, and a lecturer in the department of orthopaedics at the University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN). He is also the intern coordinator for his hospital complex, and has a keen interest in the development of junior doctors in his hospital and the nation. We unpacked the path to specialising in orthopaedic surgery, the perks, perils and pitfalls of this discipline, and what it takes to shine during your junior years and registrar time.
