In today's episode of Psych Talk I speak with Dr. Diana Sorrentino, PhD, a gender diversity and transgender subject matter expert, author, and host of the Paradoxes of Gender Podcast. Dr. D has spent over 40 years of research studying gender diversity and gender neurobiology and 36 years experience working with over 1000 gender diverse, gender variant, and transgender individuals. She starts the episode talking about how she started in the field and how her work has evolved over the past four decades. Dr. D describes for listeners what gender diversity is and some common misconceptions about gender diverse individuals. We discuss steps individuals can take to better understand gender diversity, especially family members of a loved one who is gender diverse. We discuss gender affirming care, what it entails, and what clinicians often miss when it comes to gender affirming care. Dr. D shares some steps we can take to better approach conversations about gender diversity with clarity, rather than being driven by fear.
