Episode 28 - Karlyn King, Popular Music Cultural Author and Speaker

from The Women in Vinyl Podcast · host Women in Vinyl

One of the goals of this podcast is to ask and answer the tough questions about vinyl and about gender. In this episode Karlyn King, lecturer, popular music academic, and researcher who teaches all over the UK helps us to do just that in this informative and validating conversation. Karlyn is currently working on a PhD at the University of Birmingham exploring the enduring format of vinyl. She is a regular panel speaker and conference presenter on all things vinyl, and has been researching and collecting actual data on unconscious bias and the ways of dealing with stereotype threats, including psychological or physical avoidance, where women will distance themselves from environments or situations where this threat may be experienced and what discourages women from audio technology, records stores and DJ culture, and reinforces minority status. If you’re like us you’ve often wondered why there is such a different collector culture between men and women when it comes to vinyl, Karyln’s chapter in The Routledge Handbook of Women’s Work in Music really breaks down the reasons this may be and now joins us to delve further into the how’s and why’s and wtf moments that we’ve all experienced.
