Episode 28 - The Lynching of James Byrd Jr
from Grievous Bodily Harm Podcast · host Karen Scaife
Today episode is our second of four featuring civil rights crimes. This one is particularly harsh. No word of a lie, it’s very upsetting, barbaric, heinous, really all the awful descriptors imaginable. It is the case of the lynching of James Byrd Jr. He was unfortunate enough to be walking home after a night out and encountered a car full of racists. Two of the three perpetrators met whilst in prison and were members of the same white supremacy group. What they did next was some of the worst abuses I have ever heard of. It affected me so much that it took me twice as long to write up because I was so disturbed. They didn’t just kill him, they brutalized him, they tried to destroy him. Even in death, even till recently, he has been degraded further. His grave has been repeatedly desecrated, racist remarks painted and carved into it. But his light shines on. New legislation came into effect, signed into law but our first black president.
