Episode 285: Into the Quantum Realm
from That's What I Call Science! Hosted by That’s What I Call Science
How does your phone know when to turn off the screen? Why can we build ultra-fast computers and super-sensitive sensors? And how does a DSLR camera capture images? Well, it’s all to do with quantum mechanics! In 2025, we’re celebrating the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, so there’s no better time to explore the strange but powerful rules that govern the quantum world. In this episode, we’re joined by Dr. Sol Jacobsen from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology to break down what quantum mechanics really is, why it has a reputation for being difficult, and how it’s being harnessed in Sol’s research on spintronics—a quantum-based technology that could revolutionise the way we store and process information. Show theme music: Kevin MacLeod Thank you to the whole TWICS team for the incredible behind-the-scenes volunteering every week!
