Episode 29: Men Too: Dr. Kelli Palfy
from The Wounds Of The Faithful · host DSW Ministries
Hollywood and pop culture often give us the impression that men can't be raped or sexually abused. Our guest today, Dr. Kelli Palfy, is here to dispel that myth and to give us the facts gleaned from her vast experience working in correctional facilities, the RCMP, and from her own doctoral research on why males don't report sexual trauma. Dr. Kelli shares about the painful stories of the men that she has interviewed and treated in her practice for her book Men Too: Unspoken Truths About Male Sexual Abuse. We talk about how males experience sexual abuse for the first time during childhood by teachers, coaches, clergy, and immediate family members, and how the abuse continues into adulthood. There is hope and healing for men who have experienced the shame and pain of sexual abuse. She is also writing 3 children's books about sexual abuse you can read to your children. This is a very important episode filled with valuable information on how you can help the male in your life heal. During that time, she noticed there were a disproportionate number of males in the system. In 1996, she became an RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officer and took an interest in investigating sex crimes. She later went on to specialize in sex crimes committed against children internationally, completing all the training needed to become a subject matter expert for the Integrated Child Exploitation (ICE) unit in British Columbia, Canada. Here, as she combed through video evidence, she witnessed first-hand the grooming tactics commonly used by sophisticated pedophiles. After retiring from the RCMP, Dr. Palfy obtained her PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Alberta. She conducted her doctoral research on the reasons why males don't commonly disclose sexual abuse. She is now a trained trauma therapist and public speaker on the topic of male sexual abuse. She wrote Men Too: Unspoken Truths About Male Sexual Abuse to equip, empower and transform abused boys and men to heal and become who they were born to be.
