TRANSCRIPT · AUTO-GENERATED

Hello everyone and welcome to the Daily P-Fav. This is episode 29. For Wednesday, April 18th, 2018, the time is now 7-10 PM Eastern Time. I have been glued to this Southwest Airlines story all day and I'm sure you guys know all about it too.

It's Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 which had an engine blow up at 32,000 feet. One passenger was partially sucked through the window and died and the hero female pilot who was a former Navy fighter pilot lands the plane. It's seriously a Hollywood movie script from top to bottom. It's just unbelievable this whole story.

But what I want to talk about is one of the stories I read where there was a guy on the plane who, when the emergency sounded, purchased Wi-Fi so he could get on Facebook Live and broadcast the emergency. And then he took a selfie which showed almost everyone in the picture was wearing their oxygen masks incorrectly. So here is where my mind is with this one. Luckily for everyone the plane lands safe.

But in an emergency situation, the Facebook Live and selfie does nothing to help an emergency situation. I get it, it preserves a historical moment which is important but when you have dozens of passengers wearing oxygen masks wrong because all that anyone can think about in an emergency situation is grabbing their phone to send a text message, an email or Facebook Live for loved ones, you are potentially adding to the emergency. In that situation, not enough oxygen can lead to loss of consciousness and then instead of having one patient that the passengers and crew are doing CPR on, now there are potentially a dozen or more people. There are usually a dozen or more patients to deal with which can hinder the emergency evacuation of the plane when it lands for the hundreds of other people on board.

Seriously, this is what our society in the world has come to. The cell phone addiction, especially in times of emergencies, becomes an equally dangerous situation as whatever the original emergency is because no one is freaking paying any attention to the flight control. Because if they were, then they'd be wearing their oxygen mask the right way. But at the beginning of the flight, all anyone is doing is looking at their phone and sneaking text messages and snapshots in before they take off.

It's frustrating because I see this all the time in my job whenever we have critical incidents. It's like, hello, we're in a dangerous situation here. Can you put the phone down for a minute and help us save your life? Wake up, people!

Your cell phone isn't worth your life. Okay, I'm done. It's game four between the Penguins and Flyers. It literally just started.
