Episode 290 | Acting & Advocacy: What "The Pitt" Teaches Us About Mental Health with Cathryn Dylan Ortiz

from Psych Talk · host Dr. Jessica Rabon

In today's episode of Psych Talk I speak with actress Cathryn Dylan Ortiz about her role in HBO's The Pitt as Brenda Azurmendi and what her role teaches us about mental health. We start the discussion with Cathryn's background, as well as a conversation about how story telling through TV, film, and media impacts real life conversations and prompt real life change. We discuss her role as Brenda Azurmendi in Season 2 of The Pitt and what Brenda’s character taught Cathryn about mental health. We discuss what Brenda’s story teaches us about suicidality, specifically when it comes to crisis situations, as well as caregiver burnout. Cathryn shares her personal journey with mental health and mental health advocacy and provides words of advice and encouragement for anyone struggling with their mental health. We end the discussion talking about Cathryn's work with the Epilepsy Foundation and her own experience of being a caregiver to her husband who has epilepsy. Information shared by guests on Psych Talk are reflective of their own values, perspectives, and life experiences. Psych Talk values platforming various perspectives and experiences even if those views are not necessarily reflective of Psych Talk’s values and perspectives.
