Episode 3: Parenting and Giving Your Kids the Freedom to Grow
from No Boundaries: Black Girl Magic Edition with Anousha Nzume · host Anousha Nzume
There’s no handbook to raising the most perfect, well-adjusted child. And one end of the parenting spectrum is always better than the other. We’ve seen children of strict parents push their own limits just because they wanted to experiment with what their parents hid from them. We’ve also seen children of more lenient parents experiment with potentially dangerous substances knowing that they could lean on their parents if things went too far. On the one hand, you want to keep your kids safe. On the other hand, you want to give your children the chance to live their lives. Parenting is a balancing act, and it’s such a complex and nuanced topic, that we wanted to share our experiences about it with you on the podcast. In this week’s episode, we’re talking about how we were parented and how that helped guide us into adulthood. There are so many things that affect how we were raised - race, generations, and even what country we were in. And despite everything, we think we turned out all right! Even if our parents didn’t always get it right the first time around, we still grew up to be very capable, mostly well-adjusted young women. Tune in to hear more about our parenting experiences and our opinions on the matter. Reminder: We’re not telling you what to do, but maybe hear us out.TW: This episode has some mentions of illicit substances and assault. Enjoy!
