A licensed psychiatrist for over 25 years, she has worked extensively with both children and adults. During the pandemic, witnessing a sharp rise in mental health challenges, she authored three books, Us, US Unhinged, and US Fractured, to encourage self-awareness, personal responsibility, and healing. Her work is driven by a deep commitment to creating positive change and leaving a meaningful legacy for future generations.📈 Rising ADHD Diagnoses and Medication PrescriptionsRates of ADHD diagnosis in children have increased significantly over the past decades in many countries. For example, surveys in the U.S. showed around 11 % of children have received an ADHD diagnosis, up from lower rates in earlier years. In Ontario (Canada), prescriptions for stimulant medications to treat ADHD grew by about 157 % from 2015 to 2023, reflecting a marked rise in medicated child patients. Evidence suggests overdiagnosis and overtreatment of ADHD in children and adolescents may be occurring, especially in cases with milder symptoms or borderline cases. A systematic review found indications that many diagnosed cases and subsequent medication use might not strictly reflect true underlying disorder rates. Some research shows that children who are younger within their school grade (and may be developmentally less mature) are more likely to be diagnosed and medicated, which can indicate mislabeling normal behavior as ADHD. Diagnostic practices vary widely by location and clinician, which can contribute to inconsistencies in who gets diagnosed and treated.Better awareness among parents and clinicians and reduced stigma have likely increased diagnosis and treatment access. However, looser application of symptom criteria, social and school pressure, and caregiving expectations might contribute to diagnosing children who don’t strictly meet full diagnostic thresholds. Some experts argue that increased diagnosis reflects better recognition of previously under diagnosed children, including girls and adults. Others caution that medicating children without thorough assessment may expose some to unnecessary pharmacological treatment and its side effects.❗ Concerns About Over diagnosis and Inappropriate Medication🧠 Why the Trend Is Happening⚖️ Balance of Perspectives
