Episode 3 - Sweet Home

Episode 3 of Columbia leaves California behind and drops us into Sweet Home, Oregon, on a cold January day. Thomas arrives as an outsider, walking into a town that still remembers the Green Peter drawdown and what it did to their trust in the tap. The official reports say the water is fine. The filters and the people who had to live through it remember something different.Most of the episode unfolds around a failing co-op well on the edge of town. A private company is circling with a contract that promises “stability” and “predictable rates” in exchange for permanent control of the water under a low-income trailer park. Thomas gets pulled into a salvage job that looks small from the outside: an old pump, some borrowed tools, a ditch in the cold. What’s really at stake is whether a rural, mostly conservative town quietly signs away its independence because it’s tired and scared.Along the way, we meet Ruth, the hardware-store owner who carries institutional memory in her bones, and Cal, who’s just trying to make sure his neighbors can fill a kettle without going into debt. There’s also the “quiet man” in the ditches, who says little and does the work. Empire is present in contracts, in budget choices, and in the background hum of federal gunfire on the diner TV, not in speeches.The mythic layer is there but restrained. Oregon’s hero, the Beaver State Reclaimer, shows up mostly as a rumor and a way of talking about what it means to hold the record in public. Columbia is watching, but the real weight of the story falls on the people who fix what’s in front of them and refuse to pretend that privatization is fate.This episode includes references to water insecurity, rural homelessness, and recent ICE shootings in Minneapolis and Portland as part of the news landscape Thomas walks through.
