Episode 3 - The Wolf of Wall Street
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
Martin Scorsese's latest film is a three-hour black comedy based on the outrageous true story of disgraced stockbroker, Jordan Belfort. Leonardo DiCaprio turns in a magnificently hilarious portrayal of Belfort as a drug and hooker-crazed sleazebag whose massive appetite for greed and its trappings nearly destroys him. It's an epic exercise in schadenfreude as the audience is fiendishly entertained by Belfort's devastating irresponsibility as he leads his employees and devout followers down the path of debauchery and avarice. Scorsese is operating in high gear with this film, to the delight of his fans, with a kick-ass soundtrack and adroit storytelling. Supporting performers are all excellent, including Oscar-nominee Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey (who is a favorite of many film buffs for his choice of roles of late) and Australian Margot Robbie, sporting a very convincing Long Island accent. "The Wolf of Wall Street" is one of the most controversial films of the year, kudos to Mr. Scorsese, who at 71 years of age still manages to shake up the establishment. Belfort's wife in the film tells him that there's no such thing as bad publicity. The real-life Belfort's agreement to have the myriad fails of his life writ large in an epic Hollywood film truly underscores that notion as he is the most notorious anti-hero to grace the silver screen since, well Jake LaMotta. Belfort's eventual comeuppance for his fraudulent practices allows Scorsese to condemn the scoundrel's actions, even as we are entertained by them. For the great director never shows the rise of the criminal, without showing the fall.
