Hello all and welcome back for another episode of the peenearing my name is anywhere and I'm one of the hosts here on a peenearing and Regrettably, we do not have Colton because again, we are still getting all the schedules all lined up for everyone But we're really excited that we actually have a set schedule for weeks after this one So actually it's just me and Jason here today Jason say hi. Oh guys So yeah, Colton's not gonna be able to be here today But it's gonna be just me and Jason talking about different things and we we skied away from some topics because we wanted it to be all three of us But these topics Colton was like yeah, I don't care about those well He doesn't care about them because he doesn't have a lot to say about them So we're going to talk about it so today before we get started We had a lot actually do you know how many reviews we have on I just podcast 22 22 and one person message me saying hey, it's really great and you guys need a beef up a little bit that you guys are drinking So at the beginning like this like You drink your coffee Say what you're drinking Yeah, so what are you drinking tonight? What are we drinking tonight? Can I tell story good you can tell so on the way over here Danny Danny lets me know that he you know needs me to make a quick pit stop So I stop at what must be like the sketchy liquor store that I've ever walked into okay It's called two pack liquor store and if you go online you can probably research it It's called two pack liquor store, but as a kid I used to call it Tupac liquor store I did too, but it's too back.
I just thought like on the east side of town like somebody was really inspired So they're like oh it's Tupac. Yeah, anyways, so I'm pretty sure by identity But I walked out of there with some Jim beam so that's it Jim beam coke okay, so on the rank of Whiskeys or Burbins where does Jim beam live for you? Jim beam is just like a it's like my version of like a well whiskey is it like is it like babe like that a little big Yeah, I'll do it's not something that I ever go to the store going like all right time I can pick up some Jim beam It's more like if it's a choice between jacks and Jack Daniel and Jim beam and you know something sudden comfort or something I'm like Then Jim beam it'll do you what's bottom of the barrel for you Okay comes in a plastic bottle people Okay, so like how we bring movies like zero to ten where does your beam like for you? I mean I guess if five is down the middle of the road Yeah, that's just average.
Yeah, it's one right. I can drink it and not feel like You know I want to say sick in the sense of like you know You drink too much but in the sense of like you know like some cheap crap just makes your stomach almost hurt Yeah, especially the next day. Yeah, there's some whiskey's like I can drink woodwork Reservance all night and the next morning. I won't I won't feel like sick Like you'll feel like tired because you had a late night right now you get up next morning But I don't feel sick.
Yeah, this one I feel a little tingy, but it's not as bad as like crown royal to me or southern comfort or freaking say about jerry's I think so if you do it the sugar content. Yeah, but yeah, we're drinking Jim beam tonight So we're gonna be sipping on that through tonight and hopefully as episodes go I'll have you like not here inhibitions go out the window, but we're a lot more honest because they're not going on us So yeah, we're gonna be talking right now on this episode We are going to be talking about comics So this is gonna be kind of like I said a couple weeks ago that we have new sections that we're gonna be talking about So we're gonna have like game sections and stuff like that not every single episode I'm gonna have all our sections in it But right now we're gonna be talking about comics so it's gonna be like a comic corner anything to do with comics So Jason made a really good point that Slowly but surely when we first started we started talking about movies in general So we have a episode that a lot of people have actually messaged us about they like our Neil Blomkamp Little one shot that we talked about actually film and the art of film And we've actually just got into the shtick of just talking about comic realm movies and we don't really want to do that We actually want to talk about movie movies So we're gonna try and put everything in categories So now we're just gonna be about comics so in like comic corner Which has to be like comic movies comic books in general and that entire realm of maybe comic-con with by doing episodes You want to go? Jason, you want to come on? If I schedule it further enough will you come out?
You know I've always wanted to go That I don't even know if E3 is still cool, but it just is cool to the nerd world so yeah Like it's another thing that's right there really man. Just go But I've never been like instead I sit there like I'm gonna have to have like on Kotaku like refresh refresh Give me news Where's Oculus? Where's Oculus? No, you know what so this summer it really sucks because I'm basically working full-time Yeah, and that's a bittersweet thing because if you guys remember like for the past year and a half We're always joking about Jason in doing his master's program But after this year Jason will be finished with his master program and be a full-fledged piece But he's practically a full-fledged piece of biology.
He's going through the motions at this point. He's shaking said yes And people but we're really excited but he's gonna have that internship. That'd be really cool one of these days Let me call you take the girls, you know, I can see all that stuff. Yeah, they have like anime corners I know you want to get your girls on to anime are they still like in other things to say yeah they It varies like okay, so it's funny is that I'm finding out more and more Amelia's gonna be like the hardcore I mean she's already like hardcore emo But she's the one who's mostly gravitates towards like nerd culture stuff just on her own Yeah, especially now that there's so much more like female representation in movies and anime and like Star Wars I've never been a Star Wars person Yeah, but for her the character of Rey like so deeply resonated that for she just had her fourth birthday party the other day and like she Started we're singing about her.
There's like Rey costume. You should I like saber? Yeah, like saber the costume She did her hair like those little three ponytail things that Rey does yeah Kind of helps boost like her involvement and her love for it Yeah, it's also into it, but she's I need to find things that I know are gonna resonate With her in those things so it's not as she's not as quick But she will like if I find the right thing yeah Yeah, I think that's like one of our games like we've talked about before like my baggage when it comes to the new Star World Star Wars world, but I've been having a revelation the past couple weeks and this is a side point people sorry this I'm sorry. Um, it's not for me anymore, you know Like it's not like Star Wars like I still have my opinion when it comes to certain things and I'm sad that probably it took This long and now the new generations involved, but I'm excited that new generations like me and Elena both love it So I'm excited for that.
It's getting them back in that culture, which I was I'm a little bit jealous not jealous I'm a little bit like territorial. No, this is this is our culture. This is what it wasn't even mine It was before me right I had the prequel And that's sad just saying that sometimes but I'm excited that it's actually cool for the next generation It's not for me anymore. You have to realize that you're like like okay I was gonna say you like this kid, but It's time to get your birth My stars are the prequels and I'm like you graduated high school and then there was a recession I graduated oh six.
I'm a freshman in college and like yeah, the world's going to hell and back. There's no jobs Your as well. Anyway, so thank you so much for coming on in we're gonna be talking about comic books comic books theme tonight So topics and so we had an episode before our previous episodes where we had Shoff and the Pavolic Brothers Nick and Yvonne And we talked about infinity wars, but we didn't get our founding host Jason's opinion on infinity wars We're gonna talk a little bit about it anymore and then go a little bit of that We're not gonna do it that for too long because then we're gonna get to comics and comic news and stuff like that so So I was gonna ask you like you want to go see it. Why did you go see it?
I thought I had to wait for the second week second Friday So was it everything you dreamed it would be for ten years building this up? I think and I'm I don't know. I'm sure every there's other people have like touched on this But I feel like I pretty regularly try and throw in this idea that I am trying to figure out I feel like in the same way that You know film used to be silent and then the next big like Invention that changed everything and how you had to view it was once like sound got brought in and I kind of feel like This whole Marvel thing is kind of like that. It's like a new way We have to look at films because there's nothing to compare it to I think It could be both it could be that there is unnecessary baggage going into any given film and they're not allowed to necessarily stand alone They're almost they're literally like episodes and they kind of say phase one food You might as well say like season one season two yeah, and every episode every movie is just another like episode in the season And then Avengers is like the season finale Yeah, and so I feel like this I do appreciate it for like just the there's nothing like this that's been set up To we could literally say like this is they laid the seats where it ten years ago kind of a thing and now it's come to Fulfillment so I think in that sense you have to give them kudos for what they did because everyone's tried to emulate it And no one's even come close like whether it was the Universal's Monster attempts to do a franchise with well, I still the works Yeah, but I just that's like a lot longer because they don't have the funny part Yeah, like they're actually putting their money with their mouth is actually doing what they said they were gonna do and not Well, yeah, we're gonna do it.
Wait. No, we're not well. Yeah, right? Yeah, no that makes sense And then it's pretty well documented how we feel about DC's attempts to do it So honestly, you know a lot of props and even though it wasn't I think it's like the weird thing where anybody who We all stick to these characters and I think we'll get into this morning I think but as I've been playing through God of War lately and talking through mythology like there's no doubt that superheroes are basically like American mythology Yeah, well that's what Zack Snyder thought right that huge battle sequence was Right exactly and so And so in that sense we love and like so deeply like Personalize these characters and so we have you know 50 years of stories on any character to where we were like reading into I want to see this kind of moment and that kind of moment and people who watch a film version of a book or like the book is better And there's like one book Now imagine 50 years of books So it's basically it's hard people are always gonna have expectations that can't be met but all considered I think they did a pretty damn good job.
You can't look at this movie by itself though Like you really can't like if you took the movie solo did it really have like a huge plot point Mmm the plot point has been building for six years, you know, it's it's you can't say take this movie by itself Like did it have a natural a normal movie story arc where you have your Antagonist does something and then the protagonist is like oh, you know smys above and they reach the conflict And then he learned something about himself that he can come over and then all this like we're saying like it's reformatting what we look at movies But it's reformatting it's hard what we know film to be to contribute but to analyze it in those eyes Right because even like you said, you know, is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing one thing on top of the fact that you speaking even further to the fact that you can't view it as a standalone film I mean the ending of infinity war it sucks because you already know like oh, I know black panther too is slated for 2020 So it's already like oh yeah, this is gonna get undone yeah, exactly But how they're like oh so there's actually a couple fan theories out there that That's probably brothers told me about well, there's multiple theories, but we'll get to the theories towards the end of this so what was Your favorite part like not the favorite part like oh look this scene But like the favorite like emotion that you walked away through with that movie like I watched walked it Was it the movie that you were expecting to see for me? Yeah, it was like I think I've come to the story Just like emotions and what how big of it was gonna be yeah, I think that they I think they did a good job personally I liked it it wasn't perfect and there's stuff that you know I had my favorite characters that I wish could have had a chance to shine a little more and whatever but Well, I mean for me hands down its cap. Oh, I was one thing I like cap more showing this movie even though he didn't have much Yeah, just him as just a presence there right But for me it was it I really liked my favorite thing was just spider-man's thread and I think that was kind of meant to be he was definitely like You could tell he's being set up and he has a comic suit Just as like the human the most human out of like the world in a world of like super beings He's like the closest to human we have yeah, and so I really appreciate it his arc Yeah, did you a lot of people didn't and this boy there's people so turn off right now Okay, so did you like how he died?
Like a lot of people thought it was a little it was a little bit too Like I hear a lot of people saying like that line was like stupid Like ever but how he died was fine like it was like I don't feel so good like a lot of people There's like so many memes out nowadays or someone like drinks like a lot of alcohol and it's like like the next seems like I don't feel so good and they're just taking that but my part that I like about if they should add that line And then he just caught him and he's like I don't want to go I don't want to go because shit That's what I think about death, you know if I was on death's door step and he's saying all this and he's like I don't want to go I don't want to go I don't want to go I don't want to go I don't want to go that was really good Did you think it was too cheesy or did you actually like no I felt like that was like that like I was watching the movie and like I said Everything was expected everything was like okay. I know this is happening. You know I know I know black cat There's coming back. I know all this but when that moment happened that was honestly like a legit like Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and especially I think because like my kids again So everything kind of relates to them just on the green now and spider-man You know when you have little kids in the house and they want to watch a movie like 40,000 times Yeah, when homecoming came out on Blu-ray that was my house was like they watched spider-man every day for like two months And then after they were done they were like wanting more spider-man So I would go on Netflix and just start civil war like right at the moment when Tony goes to the apartment Oh, and then they were like it's Peter and you know They're like super stoked and so I think that that kid in my mind has just been like such a presence in my house That I'm I do view him as almost like oh, he's just a little friendly neighborhood spide.
He's a good kid man He's a good kid. Um to where when that moment happened I think I like so tie my my my kids like sense of awe and love for like this like world of like people who are larger than life To him and so seeing him like I want to go it's like the most Gut-wrenching moment Totally like oh, it's inappropriate more like oh, no, they can't no they I couldn't do that Like you know watching We're whenever we watch almost anything like they still have that very real sense of like I think it'll be okay And by the lane I will like show hardcore what a moment happens like there's this one anime We're watching and super sad it's Studio Ghibli and there's a TV series on Amazon It's called like Ronia the robbers daughter and there's a moment where the father and the Get in this huge argument and basically the father like to censor he's like I don't have any more and like literally Elena like unleashes like the loudest like sobbing like tears of like what she's like I don't want to watch this anymore and all this out imagining them seeing spider-man die No, and I'm like the parent who I mean my kids watch their ants dog get run over by But watching Peter go would be that'd be too far. Yeah, wait, okay, so what is your We'll leave if any watch you enjoyed it. We're not gonna go in too much detail So much time on that but what is your theory about bringing them all back?
I was like I don't really know I mean, I'm sure it's in some way gonna be tied to the infinity stones Well, you know, like you see the wait you say to the end credits. Yeah in that symbol is kept to marble right coming out like One month before infinity war part two even though they're all actually think of her Ah, that was something that like I want to get found it's not a fact That's not like you heard here for you Avengers endgame at least like screenwriters Yeah, so it goes back to the line of Sarshers pre mr. Dr. Strange where he's like it's like you're in the end game Tony kind of thing next question real quickly Do you what okay?
I've asked a lot of people this and I've heard a lot of different things did Dr. Strange say Tony there was no other way or Tony. This is the only one I think my memory right now is saying I think he said there was no other way now Do you know I can't say that because everyone said the same thing? Well, some people have said no, this is the only way or whatever Now did you think he meant that out of those 14 million scenarios that he saw he lied to them saying only one of them actually succeeded Or he lied to them because a lot of you take multiple different like this was the only like there was no other way meaning There was no other way this is the only thing that that will bring all of this, you know to Victory or hey Tony I lied there actually was no other way, you know, you know, I thought that when I told you that's actually That's actually pretty not deep.
That's like oh man if he was like there was no other way like doing I like you guys I tried to give you guys a sense of hope but this is what and that's why he gave up the stone, you know He's like I've seen every single feature possible and there was no other way right? So I can't go back up with that. Yeah, that's pretty good. Mm-hmm later on this year what is slated is a Ant-man of the wasp that is actually taking place before infinity war a lot of people think that you know Hock so the only members of the team that are still alive are the original members of the Avengers So they're trying to bring it back Oh g team kind of thing before they kind of dismember and do all that kind of stuff so this year it's Antman of the wasp.
I don't think there's anything else this year But next year is vitamin 2 if you're into war two and Captain Marvel three movies are for next year I personally think that there's gonna be some superhero fatigue after that because people have been waiting ten years to see the Climb the end of this and they've been only holding on to watch the end of this and I don't I think that there's a lot of people Say like they have movies planned out through 2025. That's ginormous to me. Yeah I think that's why and there's a smart move and I think they're gonna lean into it even more heavily But if you notice they've really branched out into a thing where they're now hiring Directors that have a really specific vision and are known in a certain genres And so now each film is like it's like a genre film And so because before if you look at everything before I guess I'll have to give it to guardians the galaxy every film before that was the same type of film Ah, yeah, and then guardians of first one like okay We're gonna make this like a space comedy and then like a family feel because all the other ones were more like single solo chillos right yeah, yeah, and then with Spider-Man homecoming was very much like in old school like you know teen comedy and then So a Ragnarok which is probably one of my favorites is one of my favorite directors Was very much this like quirky, you know foreign sensibilities and it's like comedic timing and so There I think that we're gonna see more of that I think that's there gonna be their solution is they're gonna retire the old guard and then moving forward everything is gonna feel very Separate and unique in that sense because they're gonna like branch out into different types of storytelling. Okay, so that makes sense I can see that I just worry that it'll work.
Yeah, I think can work I think it can work but I I agree see like Thor Ragnarok was really really really good. I didn't think I was gonna like it as much as I did Um, I have a not a weird theory But I have like I think the reason why I didn't like The the Marvel crack of joke all the time is because I was watching a little a little featurette from looper And they interviewed a lot of the directors from the MCU and they said that the reason why like a lot of that comedy doesn't come from the writers It's actually a lot of improv and for me as a theater kid I'm not the biggest improv fan Because it's just like it's it's weird. It's quirky to me. I appreciate improv, you know, I think it's a lot of time But when I think improv I think my god So that's why a lot of the comedy in Thor they said that Thor Ironman won and we had the most improv followed by a Thor Ragnarok And they said that take away TT even said like 80% of this movie We had an outline of the story beats that we wanted and we went in for those scenes It was 80% improv.
So I was like, maybe that's why all this comedy kind of worked to this But I don't know I can't see a movie that's 80% improv and it works so well, you know So it's kind of like jungle ball, but it just didn't and I think that moving forward some of the movies like we'll have those niches that you say Um, but I think there's gonna be I don't know why I just I have this feeling and I could be what I said wrong I think there's gonna be superhero fatigue by the end of next year because people If they do a good job capturing, you know, the younger generation, okay But I think there's gonna be a reboot. I really do I think they're gonna recast iron man because what happens when there's like there's always these trends Now if they did such a good job by redirecting the river kind of a thing of filmmaking Then what they could have what they're doing is they're reformatting our brains What we look at movies kind of like you said and then they can go on forever That's just fine. But if it's the old way of the way movies used to be You know for 10 years, we got a lot of conspiracy theories and we got a lot of AI movies and we got a lot of different types of movies So now with a superhero thing, I'm just waiting for that superhero fatigue for them to be like, oh crap We're losing money. What makes us money Captain America in Iron Man You know and then they do some way to reboot it could be and so but that's me doing on the old school way of Doing storylines, but they have kind of like re-corrected the river kind of thing or directed the river in a different way Yeah, I feel like I feel like though the main thing Hands down if you ask me what made what made Marvel successful isn't the characters It's to an extent not even really the stories because like we talked about a minute ago The early especially the early phase one and phase two were all the same movie But I think that they have the most impeccable casting ever to where like they're kingmakers Like Robert Downey Jr.
He was kind of an I mean obviously had a huge history before that But I mean his star wasn't like the brightest star in Hollywood Yeah, and then they give him this and it was like you are Iron Man Oh, yeah, you know, um for everybody like they touch someone and like this person is now a list forever Um, and I think that because of that I think that not only would it be really hard like they know they can't pull the trigger too quick on Any kind of reboot where they reintroduce a new Tony Stark or a new Chris But I think that they again have done such impeccable casting and their new people that they're setting up to be the new I mean Tachala Wakanda, you know, they are the new Tony Stark the new hub of technology and team building and Peter is the new cap like the moral compass Yeah, I think they've done even in that such impeccable casting that I think are gonna be the new characters that people are gonna rally around Not because necessarily just the hero but because like I just like watching this guy on film Yeah, no, that's true because even like I mean if you go back to even civil war, he's like were you from kid? He's like Queens and he's like Brooklyn. Yeah, you're already comparison with which one which is funny that like back in the day like Brooklyn was like this rough and tumble like yeah from Brooklyn And then now it's like all the kind of toast Cap was branching on Sunday It's amazing. Um, so yeah, uh, I think shop had a theory or cool.
I forgot who had the theory that um shuni shuri shuri Yeah, the chalice sister is gonna be the new Iron Man because you know ree ree Williams Oh, comic books African American woman who is the new Iron Man the invincible Iron Man, right? So they want to make her because she's like tech crazy savvy that she becomes the new Iron Man. I got you What's up guys? This is one of your founding hosts at danny murrie here to give you your public psa of the day which is Don't text and drive or drink and drive.

They're they're leaning into it just enough DC is but they're not doing it like I remember when spidey and mary jane got married and there was like 15 different crossovers like line up to the wedding ready to They're doing one little arc. Um, but have you been reading batman leading up to today leading up to the wedding? Yeah, so are you are you current? Yeah, so even like booster gold story, right?
Good god I read that just the other day and I was like what the hell is happening first of all and seeing where everyone just shooting each other Right like okay. So tom king has a tom king is a listener. Tom king is the writer on batman right now leading up to the sweating He's the one who's actually spearheading the sweating between the bat family and um, I'm not the biggest tom king fan I've gone on record. I'm not tom king Jason kind of skewed not skewed He kind of changed my mind a little bit when it comes to some aspects of tom king tom king I heard he's doing a great job on mr.
Marvel. No, what's yeah? What's his name? Mr.
Marvel. I don't know he was writing a vision comics vision vision, but mr. Marvel the guy with the red He's one of the gods from eugenicist mr. Miracle mr.
Miracle mr. Miracle. That's what it is mr Miracle. He's right mr.
I'm here nothing but great things from it Um tom king was also one of the writers on grayson before the reboot I I'm not a big fan of tom king stories. I have to i'm tinkering tom king moments that i'm actually liking so there's an issue 41 where Selena goes to pick a wedding dress you remember that one and it was going through the time of the outfits and this concept of like nothing Change between me and your bats the only thing that's changed with our outfit And we just been waiting for the perfect outfit to actually succeed on what our feelings toward each other I kind of like that that was actually really good. Yeah, and that's what i'm saying in defense of skum king I think he's actually a great writer really I think He where he was for me and that's what people I think that he whenever it comes to like He has a certain niche that fits him and he works amazing in that niche But when he tries to step out when it comes when he tries to do something like really gritty or really action Like the war of jokes and riddles. Yeah, okay, I can stand that or the bane story arc.
I think it was really really crap Yeah, but when he does he's given me my favorite issues of some of my characters that I love in like 10 years like tommy Grayson there's only the fourth or fifth issue is like gracing walking across the Sahara desert carrying a baby That was my favorite to grace in the story I've read and in close to 10 years the the issue after the wait after the engagement of Clark and lois and selena and person a double date. Yeah was one of my favorite stories period Yeah, I mean when he shows like the human side of characters Um, I think that's his like special area that no one else could write like that like, you know We're all big scott snider fans, but he his world is like the dark like exterious Yeah exploring mystery exploring like the heart of like evil itself. Yeah corrupted crap. Um, and he does have some pretty cool Like human moments too, but I think tom king could just write I would I would I would pay big bucks to just like read a book of I don't know a day in life.
Yeah, yeah, if he just had like do you see we'll cover that shit right now Like Batman. I don't know. We'd call it like daytime Yeah, like if he wrote like a Batman family vacation, I would take my money Yes, no, and that's the reason why I like tom king Yeah, she was really good and then I went to this booster gold story and I was like what is happening? Um, which I in some aspects is good.
Sometimes it's bad, but I mean when I was reading That that's that story where she's getting her wedding dress. I was like, this is actually really good Right, this is really really really good tom king and he's kind of like a zax nighter to me when zax nighter is a amazing director for action. Yeah He's probably one of the best out there. He can create the best action that you've seen around with effects and everything but creating a great story He really doesn't have it zax niner and that's why I think of tom king tom king is amazing when it comes up like that issue like he said What a double date?
Um, the issue where um, it's called rules of engagements where because batman is betrothed to Talia and he has to like break that curse him and Selena have to go see talia and then dick and damey in our outside He's like you can leave now dame dick and he's like no Right here, right here. Right exactly and again like those human moments like as simple as that of like exploring damey in like this little rat bastard Like being able to like explore like at the end of the day He's just a kid and his dad is getting married and never told him and yeah Like his only connection to figure out is like his older brother Yeah, and just that like human it didn't have to be this huge gesture just like dude I'm just gonna sit with you. Yeah, and it was like the most beautiful moment. Yeah, I think that's where tom king shines He really does um and so I'm I'm kind of looking forward Are you how what are your feelings towards the wedding because tom king is is gearing this and because this is a huge human moment for bats Um, I think the wedding itself will be good, but I had a long talk with roger and roger and i were trying to figure out Who the wedding court's gonna be?
So talking again covered um no, I'm just doing so I think the wedding is gonna be good. Do you first question? Do you think they're gonna fall through with the way? Um, I hope they do I think they will I mean I know that it's comics so there has to be all these last minute like But well that series I was telling you leading up to an expiderman do this be led up with a whole bunch of different side arms Right they're doing their side arc is every single villain trying to stop this wedding and damian has to go stop ros Right and then like dick is going against hush.
I think yeah, so like there's different villains are like no This can't be kind of a thing. Um, so that's theirs. They've done done but when it was actual Actual things. I don't know if it's gonna be the actual issues but these side stories exactly right I mean and all I mean all these issues of tom king sensing engagement have all been kind of like some of that like cleaning house So that this could happen and I mean the thing I'm most excited about is just that from what I read This is gonna give us a few issues of dick filling in as Batman again So that's all I need Yeah from what I read it's like, you know, Bruce's, you know, honeymoon or whatever Right.
Yeah fucking space like we're gonna go to the ruins of Krypton You can't go to Paris. We're there every other day. Yeah, it's like way too ordinary But so I I hope they fall through because this kind of opens up a different aspect and tom king does really good like we said So I want to see just like how we saw bat that soups as a father and glisten did amazing job Exactly and I'm and I think that's a good thing. I think what you said is that I think the one thing that they need to do I think when comics are the strongest is when they give faith They put faith in the intellect and the emotional Intelligence of their readers yeah to where they can have human lives and still be larger than life And I think that like you said to me everything I've seen of Superman sent like the superman has floundered and floundered For years and years and years and the one thing that was missing like this stroke of brilliance Was just bringing it back and saying you know what he's married and he's got a kid and exploring his vulnerability Through the lens of this kid.
Yeah, rather than Tortured on the last Krypton bitch you were raised as an infant as a human like you're not no you weren't adopted at 13 dude You don't got daddy issues Honestly, I think that was the smartest thing I think Our they're a powerhouse duo Insanely good. They're one of the most unappreciated comic duos today. Oh, yeah, I think I think it's sad that there's people who rise to like me New York status and it's like whoo Artiswise like jr's on this book now Jr. Jr's and I'm just like I'm over it dude.
I'm over it. I don't need your blocky crappy looking stuff Um, but dude lines everywhere but talk about like genius like one of the most heartbreaking genius issues On to both of their credit was the silent issue after Damien died rec ramp. Yeah, oh god like just shows Tomasi's like writing ability to script out an entire silent issue and still like you're left with like the ultimate gut punch at the end But also shows Gleason's amazing storytelling that he can like just capture like these moods that really resonate with you Yeah, amazing amazing. So um Let's let's go into a little bit.
I want to talk about the court because like I said like bats getting married I think king can actually do something with that Moments he can story arcs. I'm still not sold on him like that poison ivy story arc. I wasn't sold on that Really what him and diana in that quantum thing work time. I was like, what is it on dragon ball?
The hyperbolic they're an hyperbolic chamber forever. I kind of like that one, you know and then like I was so real too Because when he gets back he's talking to Selena. He's like, did you behave? He's like, yes, but not enough and you're like, okay, okay?
Like that was real human, you know like I get that and I had like a scenario kid You like you know that thing you have with your girlfriend or your wife like what yeah And I was like, well, I said this and I showed her that she's like I get it. I don't understand it I wouldn't like it but I understand it, you know kind of thing right um so moving forward I think he's gonna be really good. What do you think the court's gonna be? I think I don't know.
I hope they don't I hope I think editorial steps in they're gonna go the easier out and it's like all the jl boys It's gonna be hell no that that would be crap. I think Even less than that. I think if they were truly hardcore about it in in the most like it's gonna offend people But stick purely to the purist of roots. I think Alfred should walk Selena down the aisle.
Yes agreed I think um it should be even though it hurts my soul a little bit Probably Clark will be the best man, but I I want to be either dick or Clark And I think it would just be dick Clark and like Damien in some capacity whether he was a ring pair So bad so bad that'd be the greatest ever you know like I should be where you are recent Yes, but I think it should be like a simple and bare. It shouldn't be like, okay, let's all right. I'll come in here. Yeah, you're here Like no, I don't want that I think that's what make a lot of like the broadest base of fans happy, but I don't think that would be true to the character Really?
Yeah, I think I think Clark is gonna perform the ceremony I think and I want dick to be the best man. I could see that I could see that I'd be down for that But here's what I really want. Here's a moment that please please king if I'm you know that that part from I know you listen So You know like you know like in bugs life where that guy that that that bigger grasshopper he's like oh I'm asking you with my brain remember that that's what I want to do calm. He's like Tom I want a moment with Alfred and Salina before he walks her down the aisle and be like it's your turn I have carried this weight of helping him through the darkness.
This is a big responsibility It's your job now. Yeah, I want that dialogue I want that to happen and I hope it does I think it'd be a beautiful moment because they could do this and I wouldn't care I was I was like what when I first heard it but now It's taking a long time to be like six seven months. They've been building up to this Right, so I think they can do it and they can do it right, but I grew with you on the court Alfred giving casino away. Clark doing ceremony dick is the best man For Jason could be an usher.
I freaking okay, right? Yeah He can be a bouncer Aquaman is like patrolling the parking lot. Just like make sure it's safe. No right They're gonna have the wedding at central park and Aquaman is gonna be in the pond.
No no villains here Like family guy have you seen that issue like he has useless like he has useless as a superhero as Aquaman And then it's a guy like stealing a person woman on the beach and Aquaman's oh man. Oh man You would regret that if you were over here. Oh man trying to do that like 15 feet closer He's like hell talk about hell. Well, you know, I mean he's gotta get closer to the water man You'd really regret it if you were over here.
So it'd be really funny. So yeah, that's really cool Um say moving on comic book hit in the history of news. So yeah, there is a bat wedding can happen Doomsday clock. I want to get your thoughts on that.
We haven't really gotten your thoughts on The thoughts of june's a clock I've gone on all sarcom's podcast for the review of the first issue They're on issue for now. I know you don't read it But it's because you have this pre-thing in your brain about it Yeah, and I want to hear that and I'm gonna tell you what I think about it I just read issue for last night. So I want to hear your thoughts on june's a clock. Uh, I don't know it's hard like For me real quick.
Sorry. Doomsday clock listeners is the emerge and I'm mergents is the integration of the watchmen universe So you remember the watchman movie that was made by sex iron that was based off a comic book that was made in the 1980s Um, it's it's held as the bible for some graphic novels Um, and they're kind of merging the watchman universe and the dc universe and they're kind of combining them And this is the story arc of manhattan after everything that transpired in the watchman comes to our comes to the dc universe And it's trying to change things and now both universes are being kind of combined. So this is what she's gonna be talking about with it. Good.
Um, Let's see. Um, it's hard for me because watchman. I appreciate it for what it is, but it doesn't it's not a sacred cow to me I know it is for a lot of people. Have you read it like full?
Yeah. Yeah, what were your thoughts after you first read just watch me? I thought it For the time period where it came in 80s the era of you know dark knight returns and Watchmen and this I appreciate the role that it played in deconstructing superheroes and not just being like, hey We don't have emotional trauma. We just see death 24 seven, but you know, it's all good.
We're heroes Um, I appreciate that it instead took a look at like no these guys are broken too Like you know, you can't do this day in and day out and not be broken you can't have people who don't have A great number of flaws. So I enjoyed that aspect of it. Um, whenever I think I'm kind of cynical in some sense when it comes to comics like To me it feels like this was just trying this was trying too hard. Maybe Um introducing some of the watchman thing.
I think it was like everybody would be like, oh, I'll buy this Yeah, and not necessarily like a really well-done ballad reason to do so especially because they've dragged it out so long since rebirth happened And we're gonna be two years here. Yeah, it's like been it's been a good length of time And for them to still be dragging it out to me as painful Like if they I feel like if they had a really great story that they were passionate about and that they knew readers would resonate with And they just executed it then I it might win me over but the fact that it's been this like long teased dragged out like You know trying so hard to stay on the edge of your seats fans the payoff is coming For me, it's just one giant crossover. Yeah, it's left me. It's left me just kind of like cynical I know I know for a fact I could not read a single issue and Any given book that I follow will stay just the same.
Um, and I know that's true of almost all crossovers do a clock takes place a year In the future of current comic book arts. Yeah, there's like, okay. Um, I didn't know that but still it's just hard that part's hard for me. Um I really think empress there's some things I'm a big I'm a big fan of letting things um exist in their era and When it's time to move on you give space for new stories and new characters And there's some people who I think should just stay in their place.
Like I'm hardcore. I think Jason Todd should still be in the grave I think um uncle ben should forever stay in the grave. I think it's cheap Like I just found out that over in the pages of spider-man. He has been confirmed to have like a long lost sister Ah, yeah, she has like a sister.
I think she like worked for shield and now she's like in his life. I'm like really no No, that's like the whoo dramatic twist that I just feel like could be better done without like I feel like it cheapens Comics as a medium when we rely on oh, let me pull though like the most like oh you didn't see that coming Yeah, um like I just went to all star comic podcast like the last month and the issue that we did was like Okay, so it's like it's like a transition. It's amazing spider-man. It's one writer Um, dance slots has been writing it forever.
Yeah, he's been there since like one more day I was like what nine years ago at least it was probably more good god So dance lots is writing for it and there's a lot of fans of him That's fine and I had to read an issue for all star comics podcast go go check out star contest. Oh, she has no It's really podcast great guys great friends of the podcast. Um, and we had to do he's leaving spider-man officially and another writer sticking over in his last story, um is The green goblin. Oh, right being merged with carnage.
Right And it was it was like I okay like yes, that's a good story and you go over the all star comics podcast and listen to that episode But it was it was it felt a lot like that like it just didn't give me it just didn't give me a lot And some people at the podcast really loved it, but for me I haven't really read a good marble book a long time. It was just like here's here's my helmet before I leave Right and like you didn't see that coming hot like the Kitchen not j So you know what spread left side of the left side of the the open book left side on the right side The left side was an ad the right side at the very top an explosion happens By the end of the page by the bottom He's already dying And the carnage thing is already taking over Like just get through all this crap and we'll get to carnage because people just want to see that You know and people like oh, I just want to see it's really good and art to me was kind of like half-assed It was like it looked like a demon that's about it. Yeah like the stereotypical what you look like a demon Right and did you see it didn't nurture it nurturing creates good human beings You know nurturing for stories create good stories and then they were just rushing through it And that's why I think it's sad for obviously yeah, and did you see like there's another issue Now harry or not harry norman is now whatever they're calling him like red goblin or yeah the red goblin green carnage or some shit But anyways he goes and he confronts harry and his family and then he takes harry to son and he's like come to grandpa boy And then he like turns them into like a little carnage baby, too Yeah, and it's just the stakes are getting higher. We're like dude.
Come on like and that means I mean Marvel's not doing that great and even with like norman osmorn freaking Impregnating quince stacy. Yeah, like that was just some BS. Yeah like and again. It's just speaks to that like whoa Yeah, it's like ww culture it is ww culture.
That's what it is And that's what I mean as far as and hey no disrespect to any potential fans of ww I can remember being in second grade and realize like this shoots fake Like no disrespect when I found out I'm sung great Just the moment of like the moment when I realized as a kid that that was fake I felt like in christmas story when relfie gets he's waiting for weeks for the decoder ring for the little orphan anime message and I was like don't forget to drink your oval but commercial no That's how I felt and so I think for me personally when I look at some of these stories like that like oh Norman fathered guenstace these kids and it's just like so it's so does not respect the reader. Yeah, I feel like they're just trying to like you said whether it's hype or Um, what is the most? Headline worthy. I think they're doing that.
Yeah, what is the most gonna like grab your attention grab your soul and like this story is gonna Stick with you. Yeah, because once you get to that kind of stuff. It's like and we know this is gonna be erased We know whatever. Yeah, it's gonna be renamed.
Yeah. Yeah, I like it better when it's something that feels earned that feels a little more Human because I think it's like I read one time Um just talking about even like in film and how violence is used and there's sometimes where it's like a non-stop gory Action movie or whatever yep to where like they have to do the most extremely violent crap to get a reaction because you just watched people get shot On the face for an hour before this so in order to shock you whereas if you have a film that is really exploring human relationships A simple like slap to the face could feel like the most like oh my god If it's used well, it just could take the smallest little bit of Violence to like stick in your brain of like oh that just happened right right and um or like they used to say like You know because you know, I'm a Japan nerd of like how Geisha so it used to be that like Well, no, I was gonna say you know Kimono right you're covered like from head to toe literally and they used to say like when a geisha was pouring tea She would like lift her it the kimono above her wrist just enough and like that was provocative But like when you see like zero skin like just a simple act is like yeah Oh, yeah, yeah, and so just that like respect to the reader And then like just a little taste sometimes used right could be enough to really just like ignite your imagination Yeah, whereas I think the other part is like just appealing to the shock value Yeah, and I think shock value is always cheap. Yeah, I get that and that's what your thoughts of you know Doom clock that's what I think it's just the shock value like what the Smiley face button wasn't back the back here. Oh, okay, so I read issue four just the other day And it's the 12 issue spread issue five comes out next week and I was really on board I actually very much enjoyed issue one and issue two.
I think I think it was done actually was done relatively very well Jeff Johnson Kerry Frank to actually really good job. Yeah, and you know how about Jeff John? Oh, I know you Yeah, we won't go to that. That's another time in front of the day if we want to hear Jason We'll have a Jeff John's one try and we'll go off on Jeff John's right now start like this like motherfucker It was actually very well written.
It was really good. It was actually to me. It was a good Jay, you know how I am with an accurate successor to watchman successor. Yeah, I think it was actually really good issue one and two I'm on issue four and I was like nothing.
I predicted I helped catch me up. Yeah, um, let me see So the whole Oz thing mr. Oz or whatever the hell from the DC from DC. Yeah, that is Dural right?
That's not related to the watchman story. It is your uh, Dr. Manhattan Look at time right from start to finish of the DC universe when he was like, oh, I can see other life to create I want to create I want to go do something right so then he saw what Barry did in the flashpoint And then he's like boom right there. There's my chance to insert myself And change and make a world so when he did that and he looked at time in the DC universe as a whole He took Jorrell right when the planet was ending and Jorrell was his last breath And he saw time past present and future and said Jorrell is the and Clark is the biggest factor in the DC universe Yeah, so what's the biggest thing that's going to emotionally stray him to not to not catch what i'm trying to do?
So he takes Jorrell and Saves him from being destroyed and then puts him at the beginning of rebirth What we see at the beginning of rebirth is this dr. Oz that's right ting-jake out of the equation because Jorrell is practically manhans puppet Yeah, so that's what they do. Yeah, yeah, and who knows maybe I should you know go read read those and maybe i'll be pleasantly surprised To me, it's not horrible It's the Jorrell thing. It's not horrible a lot of what what they're doing is not bad but I just read issue four and What I didn't predict this listeners i'm not gonna give to my own horn I just said I worry that this might happen that they might kick off issue one two and three and be like let's do this and then issues four five and six just And then seven eight nine ten twelve And I was like because issue four the entire thing is a new roshak in his backstory Which yes, you have to give people their backstory But if you ingrain it in the entire story then I not a whole like 60 issue comic book is dedicated to roshak the new roshaks Origin is like dude.
I have to wait a whole month to get along with the story Yeah, this shouldn't have been a 12 issue spread it should have been an eight issue spread Jam packed and you're just trying to take my money. That's why i'm starting to feel but when it started out I think the story was actually never really yeah. Yeah, who knows it's hard It's one of those like I remember you have a mini again at least 10 years ago when they were doing batman rest in peace Or actually the follow-up like it was in batman and robin went to grace in his batman and they're doing like that when they returned and all this and It was like oh batman want to leave him. Yeah, we're batman is doing constantly to get back to the present And back to the right and there was this whole thing of like who is dr.
Hurt And they're trying to tease like it's actually firm who it was yeah They did it was really him they were they were teasing for a while like is it there's always fan There's Thomas wane and if they did that that'd have been like some BS and to me that's what I feel like jorell is alive and he's a villain And actually it wasn't Thomas wane And so I think that they did a good job in that I think that there's some things that just need to be respected for what they were and then move on and explore new territory a new New ground new ground. Yeah, I think that I think the great danger of comics that I think the great danger of comics is that we have 70 years At least in most cases or more This year is a day. Yeah, yeah the other day like I was realizing like to grace and head of 75th batman head of 75th like um Anyways almost 80 years of stories and in a lot of cases. Yeah, and the the great Um The great fallback that too many riders go to is like oh, we're just gonna tell the same stories over again Or we're gonna reboot or this character that you always thought was in the grave is back I just think I think that it'd be way better to just explore new stuff because humanity I mean in the same way that like in the same way that there's nothing new under the sun and they say that there's what is it?
I don't remember. I'm gonna totally kill this but there's only a certain number of like basic storytelling. I think there's like four basic stories Yeah, something like that. Yeah, Shakespeare covered them all right There's only a certain number of basic stories But I feel like if but the difference between each one is really just appealing to like it's man versus who versus what?
And I think that if they explored some of those more deeply instead of like hey, remember that thing you thought was true not anymore Yeah, it's a what's your pony. Yeah, it's not what's your pony it really does And I think we're talking earlier about movie fatigue with superheroes Yeah, I think that if they stick the course it's gonna become a superhero fatigue And I think that comics fans the truth is and this this legit breaks my heart is that I've been a comic fan my entire life But the thing that I see The thing that breaks my heart is that you go to a comic shop today. There's not kids in there. There's not teenagers in there It's all dudes who are 25 and up who are just buying books and so they're tactic now is you know DC with rebirths We're gonna sell you we can't up the price.
We need we need more money. We can't up the price So we're gonna sell twice as much. We're gonna do it bi-weekly There they don't know how to expand their base, right? Yeah, and I think because they stick too deep into you got to know, you know 80 years of continuity and we're just gonna play around in that Yeah And instead of no we're gonna continue to create such new ground such human stories that are to catch the interest of a new reader Yeah, that I think that would be the way to continue on these stories instead I feel like the unfortunate thing is they just go back to the well and they're like, okay I think we could dig a little deeper there's more water down there Yeah, you know, yeah, no I get that with with with the with the Jor-El story I did see that but the only thing that I saw that was redeeming because Dan Jurgens wrote that and Dan Jurgens is tenured because of death of Superman You know and he's tenured from there at the night the aspect that was different ish because this this idea is has been around for a while But Jor-El kind of like straight away from what Manhattan wanted him to do and it was more of a Jor-El realizing him looking at history and looking at like, you know humans are gonna do what they're gonna do Calel whatever, you know, they're gonna create war they're gonna do all this crap you they don't deserve you They don't they don't deserve your your your purity in a sense.
So that's why he's like, no I'm gonna take you off the board Manhattan was right so Jor-El's like no like I I thought that you would come to this earth and you would help them But I've seen so many years that you have tried incessantly but they're still gonna be that and Clark is like well Then I'm gonna keep fighting and Jor-El's like there's no point Right and so that's why they kept they fought because Jor-El was like I'm gonna take you out of the equation and allow them to kill themselves So but that's where he's been done before, you know Superman oh Superman he's gonna do the right thing that started to be done for but now oh no It's with Jor-El though. No, but I get it and it was okay and that's what I'm saying It wasn't horrible a lot of things weren't horrible because in that sense and maybe that's my problem Maybe I've been reading comics for too long but to me that almost sounds like the exact same pattern as infinite crisis Um because that was like oh actually the OG Superman has always he was like encapsulated outside the time space in and he's been watching everything That's been happening in the new earth and they decided it's all too dark and too evil and now they're here to fix it like that almost yeah They keep going back the well. Yeah, it's just a different way. Yeah, and yeah instead I think like embracing new stories like we said with Superman like exploring like no He's got a kid and he's trying to raise him right and he's trying to explore that the sense that he's got this like huge vulnerability It's proving because Roger at Horizon College was telling me that Superman Without a doubt the biggest selling books Batman detective comics and Superman hands down really and it's because Batman it's going towards a new He's getting married it's a different it's a different it's never done before Superman as the right but right when he had Jonathan in the old They ended that so they couldn't explore that so now those are the biggest selling books so freaking on my marketing market research your shit But yeah, okay, so doomsday clock those adjacent thoughts on that I think that's kind of gearing towards that real quick I want to sum up this real quick and this is gonna be the end of the conversation I'm very sad And it has to do with a little bit of news Gleason and tamasi like we were saying earlier that I've been this dynamic do that haven't given the proper credit in my opinion I don't see them being held as a huge thing.
They're being taken off the Superman series and it's been given to Jean Michael Bendis John Michael Bendis. No, no, I think it's just Brian Brian Michael Bendis Brian Michael Bendis who was hailed as the marvel boy He's written for marvel for years. He was huge and marvel back in the day And then he followed a graces with marvel and he came over to DC And now he's writing for all Superman titles so to me like we were saying Superman has been one of the best titles to me as a father as a new father I have three kids under the age of four years old and it has nothing but resounded with me and I've waited for the next issue And they're taking them off and one of those things are like two didn't broke don't fix it Why are you giving this to bendis and every single comic book like there's a promotion be like bendis is coming bendis is coming Yeah, roger hates that and roger agrees with me and saying like dude. It wasn't broke It wasn't broke.
Why are you giving bendis this crap? It was so good. Yeah, like there was an issue issue 39 Where Superman goes to uh, it was kind of like make a wish foundation and they went to this hospital And he took 12 kids that were dying from terminal cancer to the watchman tower and he let them carve their names into space rocks And he left on space like it'll be here forever and ever and it was an entire issue of him Just like hey mr. Superman who just stay here and they're looking at earth from the moon he's like we're gonna stay here as long as you guys want And it was just very good.
It was beautiful writing. It was it was one of those it was a connector issue You know between story arcs. Yeah, but it was so good. Why are you changing that because oh bendis is coming I don't care about bendis.
This is great. Don't stop it. Please don't give bendis something else give bendis birds of prey You know, yeah, or at least yeah, and I think that's one of the problems with again with comics And I think this speaks to the fact that the comics industry the mainstream comics industry is only a handful of white dudes Yeah, um, that's that marvels doing better on that when it comes to being a mora what's that word Diverse with my minorities or races in general models do a really good job models and DC's trying to get into there But most of the most part is just old white dudes right and I think what's unfortunate is that you see there's a whole lot of like Two things that happen one is like who did you grew up with? Oh, and that's why we're still hey frangler had some good stuff for his time But the fact that we steal every time there's any kind of big story or whatever They're like, let's go to the frang miller.
Well because it's like who did you grow up with in the moment? So the person who's like in charge now is like let's go dip into what we know that would our legend yeah, um But so I think that's a problem, but I think also with with in the comics community. There's so few creators And I think that Where the comics industry has it wrong because they don't know how to drum up new readers instead of turning to stories They think it's all about who's the creator and I think that as a result You know the same thing when when jr jr came over to the city c to drop at man Everything was like this new limited edition Batman series drawn by jr and every you're like, okay for me I don't care. Yeah, um, I never like jr Even when he wrote for or he did the archery, uh, jm.
I go to jr. She's on spider-man. Yeah, I didn't like him back then I've never liked it. Yeah, he was a huge spider-man artist for a long time But um, but you know I think that at this point their thing is like we can write what we can sell more books if we pump Oh, this legendary creator is here instead of we're pumping books because word of mouth Let's be real on the fan side the comics community is an incredibly vocal Um word of mouth community and if stories are resonating everybody hears about it Yeah, and I listen to mazzy the perfect example about yeah And I think from the from the top down though, they don't they sometimes don't know what they're doing So they're just like oh, uh, what's gonna catch fire for us and sell issues is this new creator Let's hand him over everything and hey the truth is we've seen this on so forth j michael shizensky superman Was floundering from many many years.
He came over from marvel. They thought oh, let's give him the reins Everything's gonna revolve on what he's doing and it continued to flounder Um, because he wasn't the right guy. Yeah, and I think some of the concepts I think personally like you just said superman helping these kids from a make a wish foundation I think it's a beautiful concept. Yeah, I think superman walking across america in and of itself Has so much potential, but I think it just it wasn't executed properly.
No, good moments Yeah, I read the entire thing my favorite moment is when this woman She was on a talk talk tower Yeah, and she was gonna commit suicide and superman goes up and he's trying to talk her down from it And she's all and then while he's talking to her and you just see it's like three panels on the left hand side Of the pages and on top it's like morning afternoon evening and he's there all day just standing there with her And at the end when the nighttime he hears sirens go off and then she says aren't you gonna go say go see what that is And he's like, nope, I'm staying right here. Yeah, that's a beautiful moment But the whole thing like oh aliens were living in I didn't really like the whole entire story there was good moments Good concepts, but it just was next to you. Yeah, and I think that I think it could be done well when it's time to like hand over the reins to a new creative A person who's showing they have some vision and I think it's good, but I think it's it's not fair It's to just out of nowhere just because this guy has pedigree To we're gonna give we're gonna reboot the line not reboot literally, but like read No, they're gonna back to issue one. Yeah, you know what I mean?
Yeah, we're gonna quite literally issue one Oh is it out of thousand is going to no no action comics is gonna continue Superman is going back to issue. Okay, which is that? Um, because that's like they did such a Yeah, so it's just silliness that it's like oh here's this dude We're gonna the whole thing is his we're gonna see what he does with it rather than you know Finding the people who are doing things that work or who have Stories that are they have a track record of stories that are gonna be a good fit We don't know yet what kind of fit he's gonna be over at DC, you know the marvel and DC have two really different types of storytelling Mm-hmm, which sometimes is good that it's new creative life But at the same time, I think it's it's too much to just give someone over like the entire line Center around their ideas when they have no experience in that you know in that particular line. Yeah, no that makes sense That's totally makes sense.
