Episode #31: Freedom of Speech & Section 230

For democracy to operate effectively it must have a free, vibrant, unbiased, and ethical press. The media is supposed to be the people's watchdog. Sadly, 4 out of 5 Americans (86%) believe news organizations advocate political viewpoints rather than report the news. This now extends to our social media platforms. The distrust has brought Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 into the crosshairs.Election 2020 brought freedom of expression on social media platforms into focus.  At times social media turned a blind eye to questionable content but aggressively banned or suppressed other content.  Social media is not operating as an unbiased platform.  The selective enforcement by Big Tech through ever-changing 'user agreements' has caught the eye of politicians and citizens alike from both sides of the political divide.  It appears Big Tech and the very concept of freedom of expression is on a collision course. Section 230 is important as it may determine if, when, how, and under what circumstance online content is monitored, suppressed, banned, or individuals de-platformed. Your ability, and mine, regardless if we agree to express an opinion online are at stake.
