Hello and welcome to appointment television, our podcast about the TB you want to be time for I'm Margaret and with me are I'm Catherine I'm Andrew I almost missed at that time guys but I didn't surprise we didn't warn you in last week's episode but whatever it's coming anyways we're doing another one of our good one bad ones yeah and this is a good one bad one is my good one bad one yeah unlike in previous years the good ones and bad ones that we selected all came out in a pretty tight window yeah like plow through them yeah in previous years we've like picked up that like doesn't come out until November or whatever right like idiots yeah not this time no there are like eight shows this wall and we and they're all out at the same time it's great yeah we can we can dive in like John Stewart addressing a problem no one has ever said anything of value about before that's what we can do we can just jump right in all of our thought and energy but we're gonna do the good one first yeah I was also jumping in this one there's a leap there's a leap I kind of like I liked it for the big leap I took a big leap I saw one scene on Twitter and I was like I like that scene that's my pick I'm finding out nothing else about it some people in the tumblr ask box said that my lack of preparation had stopped being cute I'm amazed you've got a cute this long one too this was a very time where it wasn't actually lack of preparation it was an interest in taking a big leap into the arms of a strange television show and honestly I think I made a great choice I will say I will say two things I will say that I am a didn't prepare truth or and also that the nature of the ask box is that even the podcast sewn cohosts I didn't do that but the possibility of that should keep all of us on our toes at all times saying if this was nearly okay's of lack of preparation I would be the first person to own it I know what my role on this show is and it's being uncutely unprepared most of the time that's my vibe this was a very time where it was it was a choice it was a convenient it was a convenient choice so it gave me no time to find out about it I came up with two random short segments so the I loved it this is what network television should be is a show on Fox about a show on Fox amazingly where a bunch of plucky like down in their luck but not in like an ugly way bunch of people all get together and do a dance yeah and they have like interconnecting lives right like there's a there's a down on his luck ex car person yes yeah it's a job in Detroit yeah of course and in case you weren't sure what city it was taking place in for at least one third of the show one of the main characters is wearing a sweatshirt that says Detroit as his outfit so yeah just really want to drive that one home unfortunately it can only ever be my second favorite show that takes place in Detroit after the one that's called Detroiters we'll talk about that next show is it um the but no I just I think for a pilot it create like has a ton of premise that it's trying to cram it like Margaret's gonna show how these characters lives are all interconnected and like that is one part of this pilot but like the the mechanism that it's trying to get in place first is you're a Fox drama about a Fox a fake Fox reality show fake for now because you know if this show is a hit they're giving us they're giving us big lead colon the real thing or whatever there is I was trying to think like Disney has a show with like high school musical the musical the series no that's a different one yes Disney has a show where hosted by Kristen Bell where they get together the cast of a high school musical like 30 years later and they reap they perform the musical again oh no and the fake reality show in this like is fairly close to that as an idea where it's like not about eliminating people but it is instead about like finding like unexpected like returning to the child like joy that like maybe you once had when you were you know um so there's like that but it also has to do this like intensely piloting thing where they can't just run it like in regular time they have to like speed all the way up they have to speed all the way through and people are like I you know we've been having marital problems for six months but just let me briefly sum up real quick the history of the problem even though both of us know all of this but some of them are really winning like sometimes it's just a guy leaving a soul cycle class and like having an emotional breakdown in the process and you're like I know this is an exposition dump I feel the exposition like raining down upon my head like baseball size hail but I'm still laughing it's a pilot but it's pretty good it's a pretty good time and it does a good enough job of throwing like literally 12 characters at us and like giving us a big like note to hang on to like a big character a media character note so next time we see them we're like oh that one's the exact answer oh that's the one who was the corporate Raider person who fired the other one and then I prepare about very miss cast yeah very miss cast the one major miss casting miss step I think Piper Parable traditionally has always been miscast ever since she got her start in center stage yes that's her no different blind different blonde do you mean coyote leave the movie yes that's the one thank you uh it is convenient for them that the premise of the pilot is like the casting of this reality show and so they could put these like big chunky character terms onto the characters yeah the voice of somebody who you were supposed to dislike for characterizing them that way but who uses terms which you can nevertheless be like oh right that's that like yeah that's that's fair it is it's fair to have like a TV producer there being like oh this is this is this stock character type and in so doing actually introduce the stock character type that they are things that makes me think one it's amazing that we haven't had a fiction haven't had more fictionalized reality TV shows at this point right because it's like the perfect thing because you get the high of a reality show but you can also craft it even more meticulously to be a successful piece of fiction right so one unreal this how are there only two two scott you're fully fucking slaps he's so good and he does slap pretty yes you you meet him in a lift too much hand sanitizer has been put in his hand and he says what am I supposed to do am I am I am I birthing a breached cat later is that on the agenda and I was like I love him and I didn't even mind when he got a plot mop it an implied plot but yeah trying to take his child away you can't take my child you I'm not I'm not currently with and who you'll maybe meet once he's gonna get a cute accent just do it if Ted Lazzo can remotely parents so can you buddy I do I do want to say that we should not in in our enthusiasm for I do I feel like we've entered into a space where we thought this is gonna be terrible and because it wasn't terrible I don't want to give it too many curve points yeah yeah no you're right you're right the very beginning is a woman like throwing up and then being pregnant immediately which is yeah and she's had sex one time and she's pregnant and then we flash for a decision right and there was no conversation about an abortion and she has a real plot love it like the biggest plot love it this is for me one I watch this and I was like oh this is why people liked like this is what people who liked leaf out the bookly like I can feel it in my heart right now we never worked for me because it's total inconsistencies were a problem for me even for the start and the auto processed vocals no thank you that's first you things and then the other thing I'd say is like this isn't this is us this is like this is actually fun to watch yeah vibes they've got vibes in the same way I am I certainly felt like the a lot of the casting is strong enough super strong that in spite of its like intense pilotiness I could totally see the appeal of a lot of and I think that that gambit with the producer who says terrible things that you're not supposed to say and then allows us to think them even though like you know the like big character things but also pointing at the the lead actor who's Simone Ricasner who plays Gabby she's great and like the thing that's got fully points at her and he's like she's got his hair she's got freckles is she black is she white I don't know she looks like America she looks like America right and so the show gets to kind of have its cake and eat it to you about about that kind of yeah I'm also like a little tiny bit iffy on the like womanizing but doing it because it's a compliment football player getting to be like the main love interest and I don't know like kind of having the things that he does in the real world like things that those things are based on sanitized because their relationship is sort of cute and they have chemistry I would assume that this is a this is an episode for Netflix that happens you know what clip do you guys think I saw that made me buy you on this show it could have been like literally any of it like a bowling alley dance or something right there was no dance because remember I had no idea what the premise of the show was okay so what was it it was the scene between football dude and Gabby at the fast food restaurant sure yeah where I was like none of this is like it's it's it's taking some big swings and I appreciate that the actors have real chemistry which I love it's more of the landing than I would have expected if it going to continue to do so I have no idea yeah yeah I the the miscasting of Piper Parabow is baffling to the bond ladies are both a problem Terry Paulo I like as a performer and she has not yet clicked in this role and it's that will store helped that her story because she leans into being like clueless mean bad yeah that scene yeah and like I want that character to be more explicitly anything really well putting forward there are these interconnected things Piper Parabow is the executive who laid off charming down on his luck white man I'm sorry there's actually a you go disenfranchised white man is what Scott Foley says of him when he is dancing which again a good line I read this this is I put this in my notes but this is it is interesting to watch shows dance around people who demographically would definitely be MAGA but because they need because they need to appeal to a mainstream audience as characters cannot be MAGA and so that's why this guy is is like the laid off but he read Renee Brown guy who drinks too hard who got laid off from the car from not the original French but we've got that pairing they're flirting it's gonna be cute and then bad however with Fappel store blonde former ballerina she noticed she learns that her husband has been visiting campsites regularly it's gonna be an exotic dancer we already saw that he is at the strip club yeah yeah yeah yeah like an episode montage being unprepared and it's not cute this is where the episode starts cramming even more stuff in yeah yeah cuz I thought I was like oh look at her dancing I look down to type I want exotic dancers sequins skirt into my notes to myself which is very important and I clearly miss clearly miss the plot yeah cuz they have the montage where everyone's doing ballet you know the dances yeah I mean I like this is just classic piloting nonsense but like how does the timeline of this episode work it's wild it's wild I know why I think so they've been in that apartment the structure of this fake reality show that's gonna air on fox is that they're going to they're gonna have like open casting and they're gonna pick 40 people and then from those 40 people they're going to call 20 people and the remaining 20 will put on a live rendition of swan lake which by the way like awesome audience drawn the year 2021 everybody super fucking horny for swan way like you have to do some big stupid like you make stupid NBC live musical production like don't do like swan like I don't know anyway so the way they're casting the thing is just like two judges sit and yell at people in real time that they're in or not which seems to me to not be the best way to pick 40 people but you know that's that's what the show has to do is like how are you sure how do you know you've got the right 40 like wouldn't it just be like when you're like trying to write happy birthday on like a sign and you get like the big letters of fun and you're like Kern really badly at the end wouldn't it like that yeah you could producers would have had to pre-screen and like pre-pick all of these people yeah which would they probably would have yeah of course and I mean just from a reality show like structure standpoint like how are you like making story for the like rehearsal process for swan lake I'm not saying it's impossible but like there's not clear like benchmarks in the like then they sucked and then they gradually sucked less we hope and now it's performance day there's not you know if you're not doing eliminations then it's like maybe it's gonna be like that Bradley Wifford choir show and they're just gonna be really good in the clutch because of how much they believe in themselves but even then there's like maybe there's like maybe there's fucking such a sort of there's like anyway anyway I totally agree that there's like way more promise in this than there might have been and I cannot say that just because it's a Fox network show it might not be worth watching because within recent memory Fox did have a show called pitch that was fantastic that like got canceled too early so like it is not impossible for a network hour long to be compelling enough to be like a legitimate this feels like it's gonna be canceled and lightly mourned after one season or it's gonna run forever I think you could run vibes yeah I think it could run for a long time I do I don't I have not seen a lot of people talking about it and I don't know if you know what I never see people talk about the big bang theory but it did great so that's that's people did watch that it's just it's just the people watching it but I didn't see people talk about it because the people who watched it didn't weren't on Twitter except for like we'll eat I'm just saying I think this is a show I a Twitter person like that could be huge on Facebook that's the feeling I get from this show you're like Facebook could really like this show I think they have to start talking about like anti-vax plotlines a little bit more if they wanted Facebook to pick up on it dance around those issues Andrew dance around them so that's one show and one approach to issues and then we have the other show we watched for today the problem with John Stewart I think does not dance around shit it's just really just exactly what it is I have 29 notes to myself about this and I think 20 of them are either oboe or O brother yeah it's yeah it's tough because it is I have a lot of thoughts about this too I do want to like up top like separate feelings about the format from like the real people who he's bringing in and making like spiller guts to point home like yeah the way that we fund the military in this country and then we and we invite people to volunteer for it it's it is often like going from my experience like with my dad it's often people who don't have other aspects or who like my dad has a very strong belief that being in the military will straighten out a bad kid yeah and I don't know that that's not true but it's I don't know I think some things in the military would show pretty definitively but that's not strictly speaking true yeah but like it's not never true it's not never happened that way it's not a one-sided time no it's not I don't want to I don't want to stereotype or be over brought but like big picture obviously is a crime that we fund the military the way we do and then the actual people who are in it who are doing the things that they are being told to do are not being taken care of by the institutions that we have apparently set up to take care of them like that that is not my that's not my issue wait wait wait wait wait Andrew I'm sorry wait wait wait wait are you saying that we and people in the entertainment industry say I support the troops or we support the troops and then and then they don't do anything to support the troops wait are you at the this that's preposterous that's preposterous who could believe who could believe such a thing to be true well here's the other thing here's the other thing though like Stuart is not wrong that he has a long record of making this a loud issue in a way that gets regularly gets very little coverage certainly not he has a very very long history of fighting and testifying for Congress on behalf of an 11 first responders who are still dealing with that after effects of that and I believe that he is he cares about this deep like this is not a bad faith project like this is absolutely no I truly I'm making a little smidgey like a little bad faith but I can elaborate on my smidgey a little bad faith thing in a second not in the context of this issue I do not believe that like he is being some kind of stand that you know he this is more of he he in his head I think he feels he feels really strongly about this and he thinks by doing this the way that he has that he can call attention to the issue like crystallize it and like drive something to be done that he has resources that like this is the way that he can use them and this and this and like this is a thing that I think John Oliver in particular does is like people take a story that is out there it exists all the facts are known like these things have been reported on but because he has a platform because he like filters it through the lens of like humor and easily shareable video clips that he can create crown swell like movements around the thing now I don't think anything in this show is going this episode at least is going to do that because it's not you know which I think it kind of knows that it is the end you know it's gonna be like a big kicker can we not do not do pre-taped segments in comedy show we just not do it or no live segments but like don't do the worst of both all the time yeah I mean this is I know Margaret wants to talk about John Stuart as personality like I I can feel that coming but I do think that's like the yeah that's like the least interesting I don't know like yeah like I keep I keep you like you got out in 2015 just before things got fucking permanently like circle the drain bananas in American politics and now you're back like why but I think it's I think it is for me like the the there's two different things there's like the John Stuart call to personality thing which you know okay but there is also just the show itself as it is made right like what is what is this format trying to be how is it attempt like what is the aim does it achieve that aim it seems like the aim is pretty clearly that it is like a long-form journalistic examination of the topic after spending what 10 years saying constantly I'm not a journalist I'm a comedian John Stuart woke up one day and was like what if I was a journalist he does not claim to be a journalist in this and he hires like most of the writing staff that he hired are from are people from news side stuff yes and the role that we see them playing is like sitting in a room with him affirming his ideas and laughing at his jokes yeah like I think he is genuinely trying to do a good thing I think he's deep inside the bubble and he cannot understand how bad what he's actually done is it's just so poorly executed and it's ultimately just kind of insulting to have these people with these incredible stories with these fully fought through narratives about it and just sit them on a panel so that he can like be performatively I guess that what they're saying like that's gonna have currency now it's like I don't know did you not go through the Trump years with all of us because I just like performative you know shock it just like we don't have access to that anymore we don't have read in that frequency anymore as a goal I feel like I didn't read the the panel part of the show that that way like it's it's complicated because I think people come to it with like John Stuart in charge expecting there to be funniness and there is a little tiny bit of funniness I think the writer's room conversations are an attempt to leaven it a little bit and they just like utterly do not work like they're just aimless and pointless and they're an excuse to end on a laugh for something that they couldn't figure out how to like put more laughs in because maybe it doesn't like it doesn't it's not something to laugh yeah but like it it's it is the thing I keep thinking about is I keep coming back to like who is what is what is the audience and what is the goal and he says up top at the start of the show he makes a comment about like the universality of the support or true sentiment he's very careful throughout when he's talking about this issue to frame it as a as a government failure and not as a failure of any particular party of any particular ideology our government has failed these people and I don't know but the audience and he acknowledges this at another point too like the audience is going to be like the sort of mostly lefty people who watch the daily show probably and even even smaller segment of that because they're the ones who have bothered to subscribe to Apple TV for something and then watch the thing yeah people don't even know how to watch this tiny and so like is it supposed to be a show like aimed at like a democrats who are in power who couldn't do something about it like is that why he interviews the the secretary of the the end of it like I just don't know it is trying to be a big thing and like make a big statement but it just doesn't have a as big a platform as it needs to and I think that the people who would most need to see it and to be like affected by the testimonials and the way that he has been affected are not going to watch it and so I'm it's not to say that it's totally like pointless to do it I just keep wondering like what's the audience what's the goal like I keep asking yourself that and I think it's striking that like there is a studio audience and they don't laugh now and they're not really supposed to like there really aren't that many moments in this where there are like direct appeals for laughter that you're missing them there are a couple and you're like okay but there but like Stuart seems a little off put in a couple times by like things times he feels like maybe you would have gotten a laugh and didn't but it clearly feels like an audience that is like they don't know what their job is in that room yeah yeah and I don't know what their job is in that room either it's weird to have an audience in that room very little of the content that they are putting in front of that audience like needs an audience reaction in that space to work yeah I think a foot flop of how the format is put forth right now might be better right if instead of having the people who are on sort of John Stewart's side sit at a table with him and give examples of the validity and severity of the problem he's deciding to examine any given episode if instead of having them in this stilted studio place you're with them in their homes in their day-to-day lives you're seeing real things going on for them rather than sort of forcing them to give sound bites which seriously gave Isaiah a show that guy was incredible which John Stewart also said and I was like one good thing you said I'll tie that anyways and then get the VA guy there in front of a live studio audience right but I do like that John Stewart's idea is like what can you do solve this it's like maybe I John Stewart haven't been disappointed closely enough in some of the people who fuck this up and if I John Stewart and just disappointed at them then they'll make different choices I like that the VA guy is like I don't give a fuck about what you think I was like true and then he plays him Isaiah and that's supposed to be but it's just like what's your what's your end goal for this it's the interview I thought I think that is one thing that he actually does well is interview people in positions of power because unlike a lot of like mainstream journalism we saw this over and over and over again like every time from to an interview like the ones that were good interviews that like stuck it to him and moved the chains on like anything happened when a journalist pinned him down on a question he wouldn't answer and kept trying to get him to answer and John Stewart is in the you know head of the VA's office asking him over and over again like what criteria will like get these conditions that all of these veterans have been suffering from like covered fully by the VA with no like no argument and no paperwork and no back and forth like like what is the you've done this for other conditions so what what what is the exact thing that you're looking for that's going to make that true for this condition and he doesn't like he doesn't have an answer I think probably because he's the head of a big organization he's been there for six months or whatever it is and like he has people who would know that but he himself doesn't know it like off the cuff so maybe it's maybe the impact of it is limited but I do think he I want John Stewart wants him to say is the system is broken and we need more money from Congress right which is true everyone knows that's a problem and we and we know that John Stewart wants that because John Stewart says John's that man's job is contingent on never saying that to the press that is how he continues to have the job that he has he can never say that to the press so it's just like what's our goal here this is very similar to last week tonight in terms of both its format and its goals except its longer less funny and less effective because one of the things that last week tonight does really well is it picks very small issues right it picks things that have been going on for years and years that you don't necessarily know about like like paycheck payday loan companies and things like that where it's the kind of stuff like ProPublica has written like a million articles about and their extraordinary and thoroughly researched but it's not a talking point that like say the movie now and then could just as well have trotted out in 1997 I'm I'm stumbling on less effective as a metric I do think I do think this show definitely needs to be shorter it needs to lose the right stuff it needs to either lose or substantially rethink the pre-recorded segment lose just lose yeah I in part because like I have a hard time pointing to the things that I feel like last week tonight has done that are are effective you know but also I mean we got those drum hats and that really that that's settled that guy's hash I think and also like you know one episode of this show has come out like how are we measuring effect real world effect in the long run I do think you're right that this show wants to be effective in a way that like previous version like like the the Stuart Daily show the Trevor Noah Daily show and last week tonight and Full Frontal with Sam B and like all of them are sort of hiding their desire to be to have an effect struggling with their desire and their ability they are putting a comedy lampshade over it that this show has just taken off this show is just nakedly desiring to have an effect I think it just hasn't fully like it has these little bits that are trying to soften the blow but like at no point are you meant to pretend that like that's really what everyone's here for but I I just I think it's hard to say that it's like even less effective because I don't I can't point to any one of these shows that has been effect like like the real world effect except except actually for John's the original John Stuart Daily show where he did use this platform like to actually create 9-11 responder legislation that like exists in the world that would not have if it had not been probably for his advocacy for that group well the thing that was true about the at least the the early to mid like era Stuart Daily show is I think it did have a bigger did have bigger crossover potential like he had John McCain on that show he had my cuckab on that show like multiple times it was it was not a guarantee that it would only be reaching the you know the choir there might be some other people who weren't part of the choir who would be there who could pick up a little bit of the preaching as well and like we have happily we have like fully put the lie to that thing or like you watch the Daily show and you laugh and you better and then you don't do any kind of political action like that's not the way the studies studies that there was one that I was just reading last week a study about this that is like yeah if you watch these shows you're not less likely to than be politically engaged because like you got it all out by watching the Daily show in fact you are like more plugged into effects that you are more likely to vote and you are more likely to you know be informed about things and this is this is the metric by which I would say I think last week tonight is the most effective of all of these shows because it focuses on things that fall within people's values right that they are sincerely not aware of right there are aspects of how values practically play out in the real world right that plenty of people who sincerely care about this stuff didn't know about and hadn't thought about and wouldn't have known how to approach solving without having a little bit of funny introductory course whether that's actually led to any change on anything such as payday loan institutions I surely could not tell you but I do think that that is at least you're doing something slightly more than this which spends most of its time at the beginning establishing that like we've known about this problem forever I didn't know I have no idea what burn pit was no I didn't know and yet still there is a situation at the beginning where he says you know what's his face Jake tabber broke this story and then he's like except somebody else broke this story such and such time ago yeah but I know the two loans were shitty forever like I mean there's something really subjective about the like who known what it comes from framing right I think if you said the problem with burn pits I would feel differently about this episode and that speaks to tightness right because it's not the problem with burn pits it's the problem with war and if he had more ability to focus and make this about burn pits that is a new story right that is a new story other than just like did you know Americans are hypocritical about the troops it's like gee john's you're I didn't know that actually I wasn't aware that people are hypocritical about the troops I mean like to to push back on that a little bit like the way that the American system works where you can get like a thing done on an issue roughly once per decade at best sure like you so that element of how our government works is at play you the incentive structures across all of media favor the new and not the you know follow up on the existing story like I am it is not completely valueless to come back to a story and to push it and to keep pushing it and to try and keep it in the conversation somehow or to put it in the conversation like I don't think that he necessarily needs to be like breaking new ground every week to be effective like I just don't think he needs to be breaking new ground every week but I do think he needs to be expressing himself in a way that isn't excessively trite and he wasn't doing that in this episode he was being really self-indulgent and trite yeah it just didn't it didn't hit me that way and I and I and I was look I mean I'm not saying that your read is wrong like really hit you that way and like I'm sure there is a huge segment of the audience that will feel that way but I also think there's probably a huge segment of the audience that is like there's truly just like hooray it's John Stewart again I always liked that guy you know and I think that he I think he has a problem because it's on Apple TV yeah I think he has a problem on ABC I would also feel differently about it yeah I think he has a problem he's on a niche platform he's trying to he has a singing to the choir problem I think he has a formatting problem yeah he's a lot of problems and the thing the thing about being on Apple TV plus two is like I don't know it's I don't think it's the reason why every creator is on this platform but the reason why you might if you were John Stewart with John Stewart's name and cache the reason why you might go to Apple and not to anybody else is because Apple has like fucking 500 billion dollars in cash there's just sitting on and doing nothing so they can pay you whatever yeah yeah and it's I hesitate to view it as like a purely a public work on the part of it absolutely absolutely like that my I have a real frustration with the like my ability to see a potential future of this show where he's like touching on some third rail issue and like it just gets to wall himself off from criticism because it doesn't matter because he's in like this like he's in the tower that's you know he goes like don't you turn it on and you know and and like I think that's that's that really irks me about the premise of this show in the place the place where it is yeah but as an episode itself it bought like and his performance in it that stuff bothered me less than I was anticipating yeah I think I think saying like it plays like the more like direct and straight face parts of the of the daily show used to it's just not to the extent that they try to break it up with comedy or anything else I don't think the comedy in this is is much of anything honestly it's pretty it's pretty easy mostly yeah yeah yeah yeah I think I do so far to say as it's bad it's not great it's not effective comedy um I think he is sincerely trying to do what he's trying to do I also think part of what he's trying to do is a grandiose himself I don't know I just if he's not trying to a grandiose himself it's just like including it's the writer's room scene honestly if you didn't have the writer's room scenes I would feel very differently about that part of the project right but that he's got it that he's shoeboarding that shit in there and it's just like these are people you've just paid to validate your ideas and laugh at your jokes and you're showing them validating your ideas and laughing at your jokes like evidence of something oh it just it really it obviously did not work for me I think we can decide that yeah I don't know if John Stewart has considered that his behavior disappointed me and maybe I should sit down in his office and interview him and just let him know that I just you know his lack of preparation not cute I think that that's our good one and our bad one y'all I think we I think we done did it gonna gonna keep leaving with a big leap and I'm gonna let the problem with John Stewart pass right through me you're welcome okay um if you folks
