Episode 32 - Cry-Baby & the Birth of the Trashy Teen Dream

This week on The Video and Vinyl Club, we're diving into the deliriously campy world of John Waters' 1990 cult classic Cry-Baby. Long before Johnny Depp donned blades in Edward Scissorhands, he was the pouty, tear-dropping bad boy of Baltimore in this rockabilly fever dream that came out just nine months before Tim Burton's iconic film. We talk about the film’s satirical take on teen rebellion, its razor-sharp parody of 1950s melodrama, and how Waters' vision flipped mainstream Hollywood on its head. Oh, and did we mention Iggy Pop plays Cry-Baby’s bath-loving hillbilly grandpa? Because of course he does. Whether you’re a longtime devotee of Waters’ filth and flair or just discovering this Technicolor teen nightmare, join us for a ride full of leather jackets, motorcycle rumbles, and high-voltage musical numbers. Press play, shed a single tear, and let’s get weird. #CryBaby #JohnWaters #JohnnyDepp #IggyPop #CultClassic #Rockabilly #EdwardScissorhands #CampCinema #PodcastRecommendation #TheVideoAndVinylClub
