On this podcast Angie Lewis interviews current and former athletes who are doing extraordinary things outside of sports. On episode 32 she interviews Daron K. Roberts, the founding director of the Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation (CSLi) at the University of Texas. He spent seven years as an NFL and college football coach after graduating from Harvard Law School. He has been featured in ESPN the Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek and Sports Illustrated. As a lecturer at The University of Texas, Daron focuses on teaching leadership to nearly 200 students each year. His courses: Leadership Strategy in Sports, Disruptive Innovation in Sports, Weaponry of Words and A Gameplan for Winning at Life, are highly sought after. In the fall before his third year at Harvard Law School, Roberts decided to pursue a career in football coaching and wrote letters to college and professional football teams. The Kansas City Chiefs offered Roberts a training camp internship. He leveraged that unpaid position into an assistant coach position. From Kansas City, Roberts went on to coach with the Detroit Lions, West Virginia Mountaineers and Cleveland Browns. Roberts holds a B.A. in Plan II Honors and Government from the University of Texas (2001), an M.P.P. from Harvard’s Kennedy School (2004) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (2007). He was elected Student Body President at UT – at the time it was the largest public university in the U.S. The Presidential Leadership Scholars program – a joint venture between Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – tabbed Roberts as a Presidential Leadership Scholar for 2015. He was one of 60 members in the inaugural class. Roberts has been recognized as one of the Kennedy School’s 75 Most Fascinating Alumni and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader for creating a nonprofit football camp – 4th and 1, Inc. 4th and 1 provides free SAT prep, life skills development and football training to at-risk youth.
