Episode 33: PUSHING THE PAUSE BUTTON: A STRATEGY FOR DEALING WITH TRIGGERING

from The Survivor's Guide to Life · host Peter M. Bernstein, Phd

Triggering is an out-of-proportion emotional reaction to difficulties in the present. It happens to everyone, particularly when we're tired or stressed. It indicates the presence of an unhealed wound from our past. In order to resolve and recover from a triggering event, it is essential to develop an awareness of our triggered emotions, such as anger, fear or sadness. With awareness, we can choose to "push the pause button", to not react negatively in the present. We can then return, when the time is right, to resolve and learn from our triggered emotions. We can recognize and seize the opportunity to grow and heal.
