Joshua Abraham Norton, an Anglo-Jewish immigrant to the United States, was a successful business man and member of well-to-do San Franciscan society. He made his fortune selling supplies to the men and women who came to the city seeking their fortune in the 1849 Gold Rush, but lost it all in an unwise attempt to corner the local rice market. Norton reemerged in 1859 with a letter to the editor of the San Francisco Bulletin, declaring himself Emperor of the United States.
