Their collaboration centres upon a collection of English ballads gathered in the early 1900s by the great English folklorist Cecil Sharp and his assistant Maud Karpeles from Appalachian folk singers Mary Sands and Jane Gentry. Numerous of these ballads, like “Fair and Tender Ladies”, would eventually become absorbed in early North American folk music.
