Episode 35 Independence vs Interdependence
from Try Not To Overthink It · host Try Not to Overthink It
Hey guys it's RJ and Kalhil. In today's episode Anna has graciously agreed to rejoin us in order to discuss the topic of Independence vs Interdependence. We live in a society that espouses independence as a necessary social norm for individuals that reach a certain age. Don’t get me wrong, being independent is an achievement to strive for in our life but is it the highest form of character development? For most of us independence is seen as I can do it by myself, I am responsible, I am self-reliant, I don’t need anybody or anything. For most of us, we conceptualize or compartmentalize independence as us being an island or a country all to ourselves, and at times developing a fear of being dependent on others. This makes us skittish or fearful of others telling us what to do, having some form of control over us, defining us in some way, or manipulating us. But is independence an actual mature mindset or just our inner urge to exhibit to the world that we can survive alone? Everything around us in this world is interdependent in some form or fashion. Everything in nature understands the need of both mutual and symbiotic relationships to maintain the natural cycle, and we as human beings are no different than nature. Interdependence often gets misconstrued by people and seen by many as being forced into reliance on others, colleagues, a spouse/partner, or even our parents. And as a result, people often will often forgo or pass on their relationships, social responsibility, and their commitments. Join us as we unpack this topic and have an honest conversation about it. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker.
