Episode 356: Take A Look At My Big Johnson

from What the HELL Were You Thinking? · host Dave Bledsoe

Episode 356: Take A Look At My Big Johnson This week Host Dave Bledsoe is pulling out his finest attire, meaning he is wearing a black t-shirt without holes in the armpits. (For once) On the show this week we are heading back to the mid 1990’s when men weren’t afraid to let the world know their emotional age by looking at the t-shirts they wore. (Right around 13 years old or so.) Along the way we discover why Dave always wears the style of clothes every day. (Hint: It isn’t because he is anything like Steve Jobs) From there we dive right into the history of the t-shirt from it’s shockingly homoerotic origins (To Dave anway) as undershirts for hot, sweaty sexy sailors to its coming out party on Marlon Brando and James Dean. (Rebels with an overshirt) Then we talk about the halcyon days of the graphic tee, the 1970’s! (Who knew the Smiley Face shirt really wasn’t invented by Forrest Gump?) We talk about the hierarchy of Heavy Metal Band T-Shirts for longer than is strictly necessary before finally we arrive at the mid 1990’s when some crass, tasteless and tacky graphic tees took the world over for a couple of years. (Gen Z, ask your Mom if your Dad had a Big Johnson!)   Our Sponsor this week is Nile’s Novelty Tees, if you’re a dick IN a shirt, we’ll put a dick ON your shirt! We open with Droz giving important advice to Gutter and close with Don Allen delivering important fashion advice!  Show Theme: https://www.jamendo.com/track/421668/prelude-to-common-sense The Show on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheHell_Podcast The Show on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatthehellpodcast/ www.whatthehellpodcast.com Give us your money on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/Whatthehellpodcast The Show Line: 347 687 9601 Closing Music:https://youtu.be/HRVgnE2WRwA We are a proud member of the Seltzer Kings Podcast Network! http://seltzerkings.com/ Citations Needed: The History of the T-Shirt https://www.realthread.com/blog/history-of-the-tshirt HISTORY OF THE T-SHIRT https://bklynmotors.com/pages/history-of-the-t-shirt It’s only rock ‘n’ roll, but I like it http://www.antiqueweek.com/ArchiveArticle.asp?newsid=2265 The Rise and Fall of Big Johnson… and the other D-shirts of the 1990s. https://slate.com/business/2015/12/history-of-big-johnson-coed-naked-and-big-dog-t-shirts.html Members Only: Local T-shirt Mogul Garrett Pfeifer Discusses His Big Johnson https://web.archive.org/web/20080419101458/http://www.citypaper.com/news/story.asp?id=13668 Uncited Additional Reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Johnson https://us12.campaign-archive.com/?u=0b3452217ea6bc7ba6cde5b46&id=7579dea09b https://www.catalogs.com/library/when-did-graphic-t-shirts-become-popular https://www.vogue.com.au/fashion/trends/everything-to-know-about-the-history-of-the-tshirt/image-gallery/65641e7e0e07560fceb738db1e973e7a https://fullpressapparel.com/a-brief-history-of-t-shirt-printing/ https://rockerteeshirts.com/blogs/rockers-blog/a-brief-history-of-the-t-shirt-market https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concert_T-shirt https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/56nG2R2ps7YJCDyG76Wjbvf/more-than-merch-why-band-t-shirts-are-so-important Learn more about your ad choices.
