Episode 39: How Do We Get to Action?

from The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching · host Chey & Pav Educational Services, Inc.

In Episode 39 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the conversations in the past week, in regards to anti-racism and equity. They discuss some of the dialogue and discourse that they have engaged in, coupled with the real pain and emotion felt by so many people in their professional learning networks. Chey and Pav talk about this range of emotions, as well as what it has been able to lead us to going forward; a true sense of community, shared experience, as well as the understanding that bigger steps need to be taken in order to dismantle systemic racism. They talk about some of the small wins that have occurred within society; examples such as NASCAR and sports organizations that have begun to take steps to dismantling the issues that have been occurring for long periods of time. Chey and Pav emphasize that there are so many ways that action can take place in the classroom, but that we shouldn't be fooled into thinking it will be easy. Action in the classroom is hard work. It takes a lot to build up the trust in the classroom, to create a safe environment to be able to open up with students, and also have them open up in return.  Chey and Pav introduce Dan Vigliatore, a Physical Education teacher with the Toronto Catholic District School Board  for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Dan talks about the idea of Educational Resolutions with respect to introverted athletes. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up their takeaways about taking action. They recognize that there is a lot of groundwork to be done before students are able to understand the importance of Action, and this is work we should be prepared to do. Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies.
