Inspired by the peaceful atmosphere and the hymns sung in the Church of the Nativity, he wrote the lyrics for the children in his Philadelphia Sunday school. He asked the church's organist, Lewis Redner, to compose the music, and it was first performed by the church's choir on December 27, 1868.
