Episode 4: Dwarf Fortress

from Pixelated Playgrounds · host Joshua Galecki

Episode 4 of Video Game Book Club by Pixelated Playgrounds covering Dwarf Fortress, released in 2006 by Bay 12 Games.

Dwarf Fortress is a part management simulation, part roguelike, and all ASCII. The incredibly complex simulation created by Tarn and Zach Adams, is not the most accessible game in the world but it may be the deepest. A fitting superlative for a game about running a kingdom of creatures tasked with tunnelling down into the earth. As a freeware mainstay that has been in development since 2002, it is a huge accomplishment that this passion project continues to be run solely on donations. Tune in to hear Bryan and Josh debate the merits and shortcomings of Dwarf fortress, learn about what makes Josh a successful Dwarf Fortress sherpa, and hear the tale of the downfall of the mighty fortress ‘Bookwind’.
