Episode 4 | Nora Vargas, Vice Chair, San Diego County Board of Supervisors

In this episode, Nancy and Jose are joined by Nora Vargas, the Vice Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Nora, a first-generation immigrant, is the first Latina and first woman of color to serve as County Supervisor in the 171-year history of the County of San Diego. She is currently serving a second term as Vice-Chair of the Board.Nora shares her love of books such as "In The Time Of The Butterflies" and "Barbara Jordan: A Self-Portrait" and the tremendous influence they had on her life. With her Dad's influence, Nora learned that books were a way to have an adventure with no need for money at all! It is through this love of literacy and learning that Nora knows first-hand how literacy can lift lives. This passion drives her fight for justice, equity, and educational opportunities for her 600,000+ residents. Whether it is her empowerment of Latina leadership and Boys & Men of Color or her tireless efforts for "The Little Free Libraries," Nora is a proud "gap minder." In her words, "promoting literacy and access to books" is just one of many ways to "help our communities get out of cycles of poverty."
