from Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology Podcast · host Candlelit Tales

Welcome to Season 1 and Episode 1 of Candlelit Tales for kids. We tell stories and we made them with kids in mind. We focus on Irish myth and folktales and this is the story, “Fionn the salmon and the Dragon” is our version of two well-known stories of the Fianna. The boyhood deeds of Fionn Mac Coole, catching the Salmon of Knowledge and his eventual arrival to Tara where he became the leader of the Fianna after defeating the Dragon Ailíl. Fionn was the son of Coole. He grew up in the Slieve Bloom mountains in Ireland in secret. His aunt and her wife trained him to be a great warrior. Until he went with a group of poets to learn more about the world. He soon went to work for the wisest man in Ireland, Finnigus, who was fishing for the Salmon of Knowledge. When young Fionn caught the fish however, he burnt his thumb on the skin of it, gaining all the wisdom of this world and the next. With the help of this wisdom, he soon went to Tara and defeated the fire breathing dragon Ailíl and became the leader of the Fianna.
