Episode 40 - Funny Idioms (part 1)

from Zdenek’s English Podcast

In the first episodes of the year 2014 I take a look at idioms which I consider to be funny. First of all, I wish you all the best and something extra for the new year and then I move on to explaining what idioms are in general and why students as well as teachers tend to either love them or hate them. In the main part I focus on 4 (out of planned 9) idiomatic expressions, explain what they mean, how they are used, and more importantly speculate about their possible literal meaning. It might sometimes result in me getting involved in some kind of a surrealistic polemic in a form of interior monologue. I also give you conventional answers to some interesting questions such as: What insects can easily get into your pants? Does a worm know that you don’t want to eat it? What do zombies and worms have in common? Who was Vincent Van Gogh and how does this figure relate to English language? What would happen to pork meat from the economic viewpoint if pigs could fly? In addition, if you want to hear my Dutchman story from about 8 years ago, I suggest that you listen to this episode :)
