Episode 40 - Kia Williams - Andrews University Women's Coach - Why she cancelled the '24-'25 season

Coach Williams joins the guys to discuss the "fresh start" of this past season after cancelling the 2024-2025 season. This focused on establishing a solid foundation and team identity. The team consisted largely of first-time collegiate players, which created a learning curve for both the athletes and the coaching staff.Culture and Strategy: The program's culture is built on core values: "staying hungry," and "seeing the dream." Athletically, the team emphasizes playing at a fast pace, transition basketball, and prioritizing paint touches to create scoring opportunities. Williams credited her assistant coaches for providing essential support in skill development, scouting, and practice organization throughout the season.The "Reset": Addressing a previous decision to pause the program for a season, Williams explained that it was a necessary step to ensure the long-term sustainability of the culture, rather than "begging and pleading" for participation from players who were not fully committed. During that year, she gained valuable experience by assisting the men's basketball program at Andrews.Future Outlook: Williams is focused on fostering a competitive environment while using basketball as a tool to help players build personal value, resilience, and the ability to work as a team.
