Episode 40: The Dyatlov Pass Incident

from Madness and Murder · host Danielle French

Authors:Charlie Cotteleer and Cassie Tyler Description: Charlie and Cassie dive into the Dyatlov Pass Incident. In 1959, nine hikers from the Ural Polytechnic Institute went on a hiking expedition in the Siberian Ural Mountains, but they never returned. When their bodies were found each member of the group was dead, most of whom with significant internal injuries. The case has captured international attention for over 60 years, culminating in many theories from avalanches to yetis.  The trail they traveled has been renamed the “Dyatlov Pass”, after the lead hiker, in remembrance of the group. Dedicated to Madelyn Nelson, Charlie’s Partner  Disclaimers:  Neither of us is Russian, we did our best with pronunciation and consistency, but we apologize if they are inaccurate.  The basic story of Dyatlov’s Pass is agreed upon; however, many details vary from report to report. We have done our best to compile reputable sources, but understand that given the historical context of the Soviet Union in the 1950s details may have been left out or exaggerated over time.  Sources:Dyatlov PassLinks to an external site.Caitlin Doughty Video EssayLinks to an external site.Delayed Slab Avalanche - Johan Gaume & Alexander M.
