Episode 43 | Geriatric Mental Health & End of Life Care with Mira Bhattacharya

In today’s episode of Psych Talk I speak with Mira Bhattacharya about geriatric mental health and end of life care. Mira is a psychology undergraduate, with a concentration in bioethics and minor in disability studies, applying to physician assistant school who has a passion working with the geriatric population. We discuss the literature on geriatric mental health and how that relates to end of life care in this population. Mira emphasizes the importance of the role of advanced practitioners (e.g., PAs, NPs) in end of life conversations due to the multiple limitations and restraints placed on medical doctors. She shares the importance of providing psychoeducation about geriatric mental health to the geriatric population and the importance of having thorough, informed conversations at end of life. I share my experiences working on a pediatric palliative care team and we discuss the similarities and differences between end of life discussions in pediatrics and geriatrics. We also get into a good discussion about what quality of life means and how we need to be careful when defining quality of life.
