Episode 44 - Excalibur *Listener's Choice*
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
Arthur (Nigel Terry) just can't wait to be king. Needing a sword, he finds one in the woods (oh, hello) and removes it from it's stone slab. Unbeknownst to him, he has outed himself as the future king; the only man able to pull Excalibur from the rock. This familiar legend is one of many to be found in John Boorman's sword and sorcery epic from 1981 (a golden age for this type of film). Other such stories include the formation of the Knights of Round Table, the search for the Holy Grail, and several others that can also be found in at least one Monty Python movie. Arthur marries Guinevere, who later dallies with Lancelot, and we have a melodrama on our hands. With Wagner blaring on the soundtrack, charmingly quaint special effects, and more than a few familiar faces before they hit it big, "Excalibur" is a ton of fun.
