Episode 44: Who Am I Beyond Motherhood? The Identity Shift Every Mom Must Face

from The BAD Mom Show · host Theresa Todd

What happens when the role that's shaped so much of your life changes right before your eyes?   In this episode, I’m continuing a conversation I started last episode and it's one that hits close to home. We're digging into a reality that not many of us like to face but, it continues to be the truth. It's the reality that being a mom has shaped much of our purpose and identity but as our kids grow, they gradually grow OUT of us. Every milestone highlights a new level of independence and it's a little reminder that one day, they won't need us like they do now.   As hard as it is to face, the truth is every season of motherhood is a letting go and that fact raises some uncomfortable questions about purpose, attachment, and who we are beyond the title, 'Mom.'   This is a really important topic because you don't want to be blind-sided one day by the impact of an empty nest and letting go isn't something we particularly like to think about on a regular basis. But even in early seasons, it's important to realize there's a difference between loving your kids well and making them the center of your identity.   We'll discuss how putting all your love and attention on your kids can turn into an unhealthy dependence, what idolizing your kids does to them, and why it's important to remember God's divine order for our identity so we don't lose ourselves once the kids are gone. We also discuss the importance of focusing on your marriage and what happens when we avoid the hard topics with our spouse, especially around intimacy.   In This Episode, You'll Discover: Subtle signs your worth may be tied to motherhood and the idea of being needed What excessive attachment to your kids can lead to How idolatry can unknowingly develop and why it's unhealthy God's divine order and how faith keeps you rooted in your true identity through every season   This conversation isn’t about loving your children less—it’s about loving them well while remembering who God created you to be. If you've ever wondered who you are and who you'll be beyond motherhood, this episode is for you.   I'd love it if you'd share this episode with another mom and leave a review if it impacted you!
