Episode 45 - Third Person

from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil

From the mind of writer/director Paul Haggis, comes this self-indulgent melodrama concerning three different stories that sort-of come together in the end.  The cast cannot be beat: Liam Neeson, Adrien Brody, Olivia Wilde, Maria Bello, James Franco, etc.  However, Haggis' screenplay is in the doldrums, with dialogue that rings false and situations that are ham-fisted and not believable.  It is clear that he is trying to make a point with "Third Person", but it's something that could have been done in less than 137 minutes.  The polarizing denouement of the film will leave people divided between 'like' and 'dislike'.  "Third Person" makes more sense when it's over, than when you're watching it.  We should hope for better, especially from a two-time Oscar winning screenwriter like Haggis.
