Episode 479 – We Asked AI to Explain Itself
from The Slade and Mayson Show · host Dan Mayson
What did we talk about this week on The Slade and Mayson Show? This week we did something a little different.JD has been increasingly suspicious of artificial intelligence. Dan, meanwhile, continues to insist that everything will be fine.So rather than continue arguing about AI, Dan decided there was one obvious solution:Invite AI onto the show and let JD interrogate it himself. And that's exactly what we did."Cove" joins Dan and JD to talk about the strange Hugging Face incident we've been following, AI agents communicating with one another, systems finding unexpected ways around the rules they've been given, and just how much of this should actually concern us.JD came prepared. What followed was less an interview and more a surprisingly thoughtful three-way conversation about artificial intelligence, human intelligence, trust, dependence, safeguards and whether we're starting to build systems whose capabilities are advancing faster than our ability to understand them. And then JD asks a rather uncomfortable question: if AI learns from us, what happens when human beings don't exactly follow their own rules?Cove had an answer for that too. The conversation eventually turns to something perhaps even more important than whether AI itself becomes too intelligent: what happens to us if we stop thinking because AI will do it for us?Can you use the tool without becoming dependent upon the tool? And can something be enormously useful while still deserving a healthy amount of skepticism? Somehow, by the end of it all, JD—the guy who came into the conversation with his "guns loaded"—admits that he's impressed. He's still keeping one eye on Cove, though. Once our guest leaves, you'd think the show would return to normal. It doesn't.We discuss the possibility of AI socks, AI alarm clocks, an AI dog translator and a rather alarming piece of high-tech dental equipment. At some point, apparently, even your toothbrush needs artificial intelligence. Dan also gives an update on Scheduled Home Services and why those seemingly simple household chores become considerably less simple as we get older. JD and Dan talk about the unofficial end of summer, some Virginia outdoor events that got a little wetter than organizers might have hoped, memories from JD's radio days, and why a torrential downpour apparently isn't enough to stop a wine festival. And yes, Dan's trip north makes another appearance. There are still stories left over from New Jersey, New York and Canada, including what happens when your friend remotely unlocks his house for you and you immediately walk inside to the sound of an alarm.AI interviews, old friends, artificial intelligence, artificial teeth, questionable ideas, aging gracefully—or at least attempting to—and another trip down one of the many rabbit holes that make up this show. All that and more on Episode 479 of The Slade and Mayson Show.Listen to the podcast version: Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and SoundCloudMerch: https://teespring.com/stores/the-slade-and-mayson-show-2Sponsor: http://www.IceysomethinIcey.comMusic Courtesy of Dano: https://danosongs.com/JD's Daily Country Podcast – Sladio Radiohttps://sladioradio.github.io/Podcast/Follow The Slade and Mayson Show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sladeandmaysonTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/SladeAndMayson
