Episode 48: BSE: The One Where She Riffs About Highlight Reels

from Unraveled & Unwritten

How often do you look at someone's account on Facebook, Instagram or some other platform and think "man - it looks like they have their sh*t together"?And realistically you know there is more to the picture than what you're seeing - but if you're constantly seeing people living their best lives in the perfect home with the perfect clothes taking the perfect vacation - it can get to you at times, right? You may be wondering:"Am I the only one who's pissed at my partner?""Am I the only one who wants an entire weekend all to myself?""Am I the only person who has a messy AF house?"Well, let me tell you - if you feel this way - you're not alone.I think it's hard to balance the "highlight reels" with "real life." When people share "too much" of their "real life," they may be seen as negative or pessimistic, or labeled as being "too much drama."I don't have the solution to this or how we "should" feel when we go online...except to serve as yet another reminder that what we see is only a snapshot of what's really happening. The lens of someone's life is panoramic, but our personal lens isn't equipped to see what. So if you do spend a large amount of time on social media, just remember that there's more going on behind the scenes than you may actually see.If you like this episode, I want to know! BLOOD ON THE TRACKS Season 4: The Brian Wilson Story iHeartPodcasts and Double Elvis In 1966, Brian Wilson planned to follow up the Beach Boys' groundbreaking album Pet Sounds with an even bigger musical statement. He was writing a teenage symphony to God. That album, Smile, was never finished. Instead, Brian slowly unraveled, as the pressure to make something profound weighed heavy on him. He worried that he wasn’t good enough. He worried that he was a failure in the eyes of the record company, his band, his peers, and his own father. He thought his house was bugged. He thought the music he was making conjured some strange voodoo that had a disastrous impact on the real world. He became paranoid. He self-medicated with amphetamines, hash, and LSD. He held meetings in his swimming pool. He imagined people who weren’t there. And eventually, in 1967, he went off the proverbial deep end. Did the real Brian Wilson ever resurface? Part true crime, part historical fiction, part spoken word lo-fi beat noir brought to you by Jake Brennan, and featuring the fictionalized voice Explicit Unraveled Unraveled is hosted by journalist Alexis Linkletter. Explicit Hooked Apple TV / Campside Media When Tony Hathaway was arrested outside a Seattle bank in February 2014, it brought an end to one of the most prolific bank robbery streaks in American history. Hathaway robbed 30 banks in a single year, all within a 30-mile radius of his suburban home. But that’s not the most surprising part of this story. Before Hathaway was a masterful bank robber—a shape-shifting professional who confounded multiple police departments and the FBI—he was a top design engineer at Boeing, one of America’s most important companies. Hathaway traveled the world in business class, working on the 747, while hiding a gigantic secret: an OxyContin addiction that ultimately unraveled his life. Based on three years of conversations between Hathaway and journalist Josh Dean, Hooked is a different kind of crime story that takes listeners on an exceptional and very personal tour of America’s opioid epidemic.Hooked is an Apple Original podcast, produced by Campside Media.
