Episode 49: A CARING, EMPATHIC PERSON IS VERY SUSCEPTIBLE TO EMOTIONAL TRIGGERING
from The Survivor's Guide to Life · host Peter M. Bernstein, Phd
Compassionate, empathic people often feel called to a role that involves caring for others - such as caregivers, health professionals, or first responders. Such individuals, beyond their empathic nature, usually have personal histories that include suffering, trauma, and hardship. Caregivers' painful experiences give them even deeper sensitivities to the needs of others. Their histories also make it inevitable that they will be emotionally triggered in their caregiving roles. Managing and resolving emotional triggering is an essential skill which can be learned and practiced. Necessary steps include awareness, slowing down and gaining perspective, and a willingness to mentally and physically work through intense emotions.
